Mining history, the castle and seasonal swimming opportunities offer different ways to explore Oslavany. When planning your stay, it helps to choose your main focus first: the museums introduce the region’s industrial and firefighting history, the castle combines medieval origins with later architecture, and the bathing lake is a seasonal destination.
Mining and Firefighting History
The Rosicko-Oslavansko Mining and Energy Museum presents almost 250 years of hard-coal mining history in the Rosicko-Oslavansko Basin. Its exhibits include a scale model of a mine tunnel with a mining locomotive. The model makes mining a tangible exhibition topic. The museum is open to the public from May to September on weekends and on selected important days; during the summer holidays, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Before travelling, check which opening day works for your visit.
The headframe of the KUKLA mine also tells the story of the region’s technological development: it was built in 1910 and 1911 as one of the most modern mining structures in the Habsburg Monarchy. In 2012, it reopened as a publicly accessible cultural monument with interactive content. This describes the reopening at that time; check current access information before visiting. The Oslavany Firefighting Museum, on the ground floor of the castle’s south wing, focuses on exhibits and documents. The collection includes hand-operated or steam-powered fire engines more than 100 years old.
Castle, Monastery and Lapidarium
The castle’s history begins with the Cistercian convent of Vallis sanctae Mariae, the first Cistercian convent in Moravia. After the monastery passed into secular ownership in 1525, it was converted into a Renaissance castle. This sequence gives the castle a different historical dimension from the technical themes of the museums: here, the focus is on the transformation of a religious monastic complex into a secular building.
The Lapidarium at Oslavany Castle displays architectural fragments and stonework from the collections of the museum in Ivančice. On view are tombstones of citizens of Ivančice, objects from the former Jewish quarter of Ivančice, and a fragment of the pillory column from the town square in Ivančice. The objects’ origins broaden the view beyond Oslavany while also bringing different chapters of Ivančice’s history to light. The Lapidarium project opened another part of the castle to the public; check current access options before your visit. St. Nicholas Church is also part of the local architectural history: it is Gothic in origin and was later remodelled in the Baroque style.
Educational Trail, Park and Leisure Activities
If you would rather explore a topic outside an exhibition, RNDr. Lubomír Malý’s restored educational trail about the Permocarboniferous lies a few hundred metres from Oslavany Castle. Check the trail’s condition locally. The castle park offers opportunities for peaceful walks and relaxation. Alongside the collections, you can therefore choose a park and a themed educational trail as other ways to explore the surroundings.
Permonium is a family leisure park in Oslavany that combines adventure, activity and nature with stories from a former hard-coal mine. Duhový svět is a nature park with colourful play features, water attractions and fairytale areas for children aged around two to six. The two attractions therefore offer different experiences: Permonium connects its activities with mining history, while Duhový svět is particularly geared towards play and water areas for younger children.
Bathing Lake and Practical Information
During the swimming season, Oslavany’s natural bathing biotope offers a public bathing lake, for which an admission fee is charged. The bathing biotope also includes a children’s water area with a paddling pool, water sprayers and a play fountain. Since access is limited to the swimming season, check current visiting options before planning your day. This lets you consider the bathing lake as a seasonal option without conflating it with the museums’ cultural themes, which can be explored year-round.
Visitor parking for the bathing biotope and the sports facilities in the castle garden is available on Sportovní Street and at the TJ Oslavany stadium grounds. This information applies to the leisure attractions mentioned. For a culture-focused stay, the castle’s history, the Lapidarium and the museums can be the main focus; if you want to include seasonal water activities, plan your visit to the bathing lake around its swimming season.
