Nedvědice brings together a medieval castle, a silver coin hoard and a marble tradition. Pernštejn, the exhibition in house no. 32 and several nature trails offer different perspectives on architectural history and the landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Nedvedice, a good starting point is to decide whether the castle and exhibitions or outdoor trails will be the focus of your stay.
Pernštejn Castle and Its Architectural History
Pernštejn is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval castle and was the seat of the Lords of Pernštejn. Visitors can trace the development of the residence: from a simple castle structure through a late Gothic fortress and a Renaissance palace to a Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical residence, as well as the Romantic style of the 19th century. This sequence makes the transformation of the complex through different architectural styles a distinctive feature of a visit to the castle.
Local History and Marble Craftsmanship
The oldest written mention of Nedvědice dates from 1350. The settlement probably developed below the seat of the Lords of Pernštejn. Stonemasonry was historically the best-known craft in Nedvědice. Marble from Nedvědice was used in the reconstruction of Pernštejn Castle and the church in Doubravník. This connects the local craft tradition with two specific buildings.
Silver Coin Hoard and Exhibition
Since September 2018, the permanent exhibition “Expozice stříbrného mincovního pokladu” has been housed in the historic house no. 32 in Nedvědice. The exhibition contains all 284 coins found in 2016 near the settlement of Dolní Čepí, not far from Nedvědice. It also displays white, blue, grey and pink marble from Nedvědice, original stonemasonry tools, and information panels on the history of local marble quarrying and processing. The coin find and craft tradition thus offer different ways to explore the history of the town.
Garden on the South-Western Slope
The restored garden lies on the south-western slope of Pernštejn Castle. This ensemble of different garden styles occupies terrain that is unusually mountainous for a garden. Its sections include a formal French garden, a Romantic garden, an Anglo-Chinese section and woodland areas. If you plan to visit this part of the site, check the opening conditions in advance.
Nature Trails for Walking and Cycling
The entire cadastral area of Nedvědice and Pernštejn lies within the Svratecká hornatina Nature Park. The nature trails around Nedvědice are suitable for walks and cycling trips and are equipped with benches, shelters and bicycle racks. The red “Naučná stezka I” nature trail runs from Nedvědice to Pernštejn Castle and back, covering 4 km. It has 19 stops featuring local sights and natural attractions around the castle. The blue “Naučná stezka II” nature trail runs for 5.2 km from Pernštejn via Smrček to Nedvědice. The routes differ in both length and course: the red trail goes there and back, while the blue one connects the listed places in sequence.
Viewpoints and Getting There
“Skalní vyhlídka” is on the route from Pernštejn to Sejřek. In 2015, it was professionally reconstructed with a stone staircase as part of the nature trails. It offers an unusual view of the castle and is freely accessible year-round. The Maria Laube viewpoint, also called Mařenčino loubí, also offers a view of the castle. From Pernštejn, it can be reached in about ten minutes on foot via the yellow-marked trail towards Věžná.
