Ivaň is situated on a river terrace between the Jihlava and Svratka rivers in the Dyjsko-svratecký úval. Both rivers meet within Ivaň’s cadastral area before reaching the Věstonická nádrž; part of the reservoir also extends into this area. This location gives the river landscape particular significance alongside the town’s other themes: history, cycling and traditional events offer a different focus from the natural areas.

River landscape and wetlands

The waters include wetlands, marshes and several oxbow lakes along the rivers and at their confluence. Remnants of floodplain forest have also been preserved. The Dolní mušovský luh natural monument covers 48.6 hectares in Ivaň’s cadastral area. Betlém is a 10.87-hectare natural monument and wetland created on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry. Betlém’s landscape history therefore also includes the site’s former use: the wetland formed in a place previously used for sand and gravel extraction.

Birdlife at the Věstonická nádrž

The Věstonická nádrž is part of the Natura 2000 bird protection area Ptačí oblast Střední nádrž Vodního díla Nové Mlýny. It is also a wintering area for greater white-fronted geese, bean geese and white-tailed eagles. For travellers who plan nature-related activities around the seasons, winter is therefore a specific point of reference. The named wintering birds and the year-round features of the river landscape—oxbow lakes, wetlands and remnants of floodplain forest—offer different focuses for trip planning.

Church and cultural events

The Church of St. Bartholomew has a clearly distinguishable building history. It dates from 1791 and was built on the foundations of an original chapel from 1724. The church was substantially enlarged in 1811, and its tower was raised in 1842. This sequence distinguishes the chapel’s origins from the later changes to the church building.

Traditional events are also associated with particular times of year. The Bartolomějské hody festival is traditionally held in August. Wine tasting is one of Ivaň’s traditional events at Easter. The Staré hody is a traditional October event that has been organised by women in recent years. If one of these events is a deciding factor for your travel dates, please check the current date in advance.

The Vinařský dvůr na faře includes a restored wine cellar that is over 200 years old. This historical reference complements the church’s dated construction phases with another specific topic; it does not imply that visits are available.

Cycling route and autumn event

The Brno–Vienna cycling route passes through Ivaň. Overall, the route runs mostly along quiet roads away from main roads and has no steep climbs. For a trip that includes cycling, Ivaň is a stop along this route; the characteristics described apply to the cycling route as a whole.

The Rybník Vrkoč pond is located near Ivaň. It has been drained for harvesting on the last weekend of October each year for several years. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, please check the current event date in advance.
