The Stations of the Cross above Chudčice comprise fourteen masonry stations in the Classicist style; from the Okno viewpoint, the view takes in Veveří Castle, Chudčice and Veverská Bítýška. This brings two distinct perspectives together: the design of religious structures and a view with three named destinations. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment for a stay focused on culture and landscape can get a sense of Chudčice through these local highlights.

Stations of the Cross and Historical Traces

The chapels of the Stations of the Cross were built to a design by architect Eduard Svoboda, who was born in Chudčice. This connects the site to the village both through the structure itself and through the designer’s biography. “Classicist” refers to the style, while “masonry” describes the construction method: together, these features make the architecture of the stations distinct. The Calvary of Chudčice has also been a protected monument since 1958. The Chapel of the Finding of the Holy Cross is considered an important local monument; the modern chapel was built in 1996 beside the Vrzalovy horky grove.

The pilgrimage site of Tři kříže holds another historical trace. It was established where the Chapel of the Holy Cross, demolished in 1784, once stood; three stone crosses were erected there. The dates refer to different events: 1784 to the demolition of the chapel at the site of Tři kříže, 1958 to the Calvary’s monument protection, and 1996 to the construction of the modern chapel beside Vrzalovy horky. This makes it possible to place the historical connections in context without confusing the dates.

Landscape and Viewpoint

Chudčice lies on the edge of Podkomorské lesy Nature Park. The landscape of the Chudčická pahorkatina is characterized by basin-like valleys, broad, flat ridges and isolated hills, mostly made of conglomerate. These hills are called “horky.” The name therefore refers to the individual hills, not the broad ridges. Valleys, ridges and isolated elevations describe different landforms and give the landscape of the Chudčická pahorkatina a more precise profile than the general term “hilly terrain.”

The Kuřimka stream runs along the eastern boundary of the cadastral area of Chudčice. The Okno viewpoint is part of the Na Kamínkách orchard in Chudčice. From there, you can look out towards Veveří Castle, Chudčice and Veverská Bítýška. While the Stations of the Cross focus on architectural style and religious history, Okno offers views of three destinations.

Historical Route Connections

Visible remnants of the former railway line from Kuřim to Veverská Bítýška remain in Chudčice. How clearly they can be seen may change. The former line thus remains an interesting local historical reference, although its present-day appearance should not be assumed to remain unchanged.

The municipal planning status from May 2023 shows route 5231, “Po stopách zaniklých železnic,” running through Chudčice between Moravské Knínice and Veverská Bítýška. This route may be superseded by a newer cycling route. Before setting out on a bike ride, check the current route rather than assuming the version shown in the plan is unchanged.
