Chlum lies on the southern slope of a gentle hill and is partly surrounded by forests. Two very different cultural themes add to its appeal as a travel destination: remains of surface gold mining near Chlum and a farmstead with decorative gables. Routes pass through Chlum or include the village in a cycling loop. This lets you choose a trip based on the landscape, cultural heritage or a route, rather than just a single theme.

Gold Mining and Rural Architecture

The “Rýžoviště zlata” gold panning area near Chlum preserves remains of surface gold mining on the right bank of the Závišinský potok. The traces form a belt of spoil heaps, pits and ditches. Here, gold is more than just a place name: it appears in several forms preserved in the landscape. Those interested in cultural heritage will find a different perspective here than at a single historic building: the focus is on the remains of a mining area.

A contrast in architectural style is provided by farmstead No. 6 in Chlum. It includes a residential building; decorative gables can be seen above the residential building, the entrance and the granary. The gable motif thus appears on three different parts of the farmstead. The mining traces and the farmstead offer different points of interest: one is a landscape whose distinctive features are linked to mining, while the other has decorative elements on the buildings of a farm.

Routes with Different Destinations

For a cycling trip, the red cycle route No. 1 is described as running from Blatná through Chlum and back to Blatná. Blatná is both the starting point and the return point of the loop. If you plan to take this route, check the current route markings before setting off. This lets you plan your trip based on the route as described without skipping the step of checking the markings on site.

Another route passes through Chlum and continues to Bronze Age burial mounds on Hora Hill. Its destination is clearly different from the mining remains by the Závišinský potok: here, prehistoric burial mounds are the focus. In good visibility, a route also offers views of the distant peaks of the Šumava Mountains. These views depend on visibility; the peaks are a possible highlight of the landscape, not a guarantee for every visit. Together, the routes offer a range of interests, from a described cycling loop to a Bronze Age destination.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

Chlum has bus connections to Blatná and the surrounding municipalities. Check the timetable for your travel date if you plan to use these services to get there or for onward travel. When looking for a hotel in Chlum, the local attractions can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: the mining traces and farm architecture offer a different emphasis from the cycling route or the route to the burial mounds on Hora.
