Krajníčko brings together the history of the village and the ruins of Helfenburk Castle, which lie within the cadastral area of Krajníčko, about two kilometres southwest of the village. Those wishing to include the castle and the village’s history in their stay will find a distinct cultural focus here. Marked hiking trails, chapels, and local festival traditions add to this picture of the community.
Helfenburk and the trails to the castle
The well-preserved castle ruins lie on a rocky cliff at an elevation of about 680 metres above sea level. Helfenburk has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963. Krajníčko belonged to the Helfenburk estate, whose history is considered part of the village’s history. This makes it possible to view a visit to the castle and the village’s past through a shared historical theme.
Marked hiking trails lead to the castle from several directions. The blue-marked trail runs from the road between Volyně and Bavorov, or directly from Bavorov; a red-marked trail leads there from Husinec. The different starting points help you choose a route to suit your plans. Before setting out, check the current condition of the trails, as route conditions can change. Route No. 1112 runs from Helfenburk through Krajníčko to Bavorov. While the trails mentioned above lead to the castle, this route connects the village to a route between Helfenburk and Bavorov.
Village history and chapels
The first written mention of Krajníčko dates from 1334. In addition to its connection with the Helfenburk estate, the chapels also shape the village’s historical character. A Neo-Gothic chapel stands in the village square and was reconsecrated after a gradual restoration. A pilgrimage Mass was held in the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk in May of both 2025 and 2026.
Festivals and local traditions
A traditional New Year’s Day hike to Helfenburk Castle took place on 1 January in both 2025 and 2026. The starting point was the municipal office on both occasions. The traditional Stavění máje, or Maypole raising, took place in 2025 and 2026 on the grounds of the outdoor swimming pool in Krajníčko. These past events illustrate different aspects of village life: a group hike to the castle and a Maypole tradition at the swimming pool grounds.
Two events in 2026 offered different culinary highlights. At Řízkobraní, held on the grounds of the outdoor swimming pool, schnitzels and meat patties made from venison, wild boar, fallow deer, red deer, chicken, fish, and pork were served. At Vepřové hody on 25 April 2026, also held on these grounds, visitors could sample traditional home-butchered pork specialities. Both are specific examples of the events held in 2026.
Sports and recreation area
The Krajníčko sports and recreation area lies on the outskirts of the village, in the direction of the ruins of Helfenburk Castle. The nohejbal court there is intended exclusively for recreational sport. This adds a sports-oriented part of the village to Krajníčko’s historical and religious associations. Together, the castle, chapels, hiking trails, and events described above offer several distinct ways to explore the village.
