Three perspectives are especially useful for understanding Horní Záblatí: the river habitat of the Blanice, the geological site “Mramory SV od Záblatí” and the “Okolo Prachatic” circular hiking route. This takes you from nature and geology to local history. The hiking connection is also specific: a blue-marked hiking trail leads from Prachatice to Horní Záblatí.

Blanice: river habitat and valley

The Blanice Nature Monument includes parts of the cadastral area of Horní Záblatí. It protects the habitat of a natural oligotrophic watercourse with a sandy to gravelly bed, as well as the habitats of rare animals and plants. Oligotrophic means low in nutrients; together with the sandy to gravelly riverbed, this characteristic describes the nature of the watercourse. From Horní Záblatí, the Blanice flows through an increasingly deeply incised, forested valley. This makes it possible to distinguish two aspects of the landscape: the characteristics of the river habitat and the shape of the valley through which the Blanice flows.

The geological site “Mramory SV od Záblatí”

The geological site “Mramory SV od Záblatí” is located in the cadastral area of Horní Záblatí. It comprises a marble quarry face, a spoil heap and a partly infilled sloping excavation. A spoil heap is a pile of excavated material; the sloping, partly infilled excavation is another feature of the site. The site can be reached via a walkable tourist trail that lies more than 250 metres from the road. As the area contains old quarry workings, normal caution outdoors is advisable. Planning a visit therefore involves both the geological features and access to the site.

Hiking trails and navigation

The “Okolo Prachatic” circular hiking route leads from Prachatice to Horní Záblatí via a blue-marked hiking trail. Naming the starting point and the trail marker gives you a specific reference for planning a hike. A yellow-marked hiking trail and a path run along the right bank of the Blanice. The route descriptions therefore differ: blue marks the connection from Prachatice to Horní Záblatí, while yellow marks a hiking trail along the right riverbank. The trail colours help distinguish these different navigational references when considering hikes in the area.

Village centre and mining history

The medieval and modern-era centre of Horní Záblatí is recorded as an archaeological site. There was historical mining at “hořejším Záblatí u sv. Trojice”. These are different historical references: one focuses on the village centre, the other on earlier mining activity. Together, they complement the nature and geology topics with the history of the settlement and how the area was used.

Choose your stay according to your interests

When planning an overnight stay, it is helpful to consider what you want to do during the day: the circular route offers a named hiking option from Prachatice, while the marble site has its own access route and the river area offers a nature and valley perspective. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these differences to decide which aspect is most important for your trip.
