Three interests come together for a stay in Hrbov: prehistoric fortifications, architecture and landscape. The archaeological site of Velký Hrádeček is also predominantly referred to in the literature as Hrbov. The Hrádeček Nature Monument has a similar name and offers a distinct landscape experience, with a valley, stream and rock formations. There is also a cycling circuit and a walk from Hrbov to the hillfort. You can plan your trip around cultural history, nature or outdoor activities.

A hillfort with a clear outline

Velký Hrádeček is a Late Hallstatt hillfort covering an area of 0.55 hectares, or 5,500 square metres. Stone ramparts mark its outline, with a total length of 395 metres. On the outside, they are 3 to 5 metres high. These measurements describe different aspects of the site: its area conveys its extent, while the total length and height of the ramparts show the scale of its stone defences. Its dating to the Late Hallstatt period provides the historical context. Visitors interested in archaeological sites will find both a clearly stated period and specific details about the area and fortifications.

The niche chapel of Hrbov

A second cultural landmark is Hrbov’s protected niche chapel, a cultural monument with registration number ÚKSP 31809/3-3575. It stands near the road from Hrbov to Lhenice. Its gable is decorated with volutes and an Eye of God motif. Volutes are curved, scroll-like decorative forms; the Eye of God motif adds a distinctive visual accent. The chapel’s architecture is therefore the main focus here, while the hillfort is defined above all by its stone ramparts and historical context.

The valley and rocky landscape at Hrádeček

The Hrádeček Nature Monument lies within the cadastral areas of Třebanice and Hrbov u Lhenic. It includes a 700-metre-long gorge carved by the Melhutka stream through the massif of the Velký Hrádeček and Malý Hrádeček hills. Velký Hrádeček reaches 571 metres, and Malý Hrádeček 509 metres, a difference in elevation of 62 metres. The valley has rocky slopes and small scree deposits. Access conditions are also relevant when planning your visit: Hrádeček can be reached by car without access restrictions, and a vehicle access point is within 250 metres of the site. Local conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

By bike or on foot

The “Netolickou oborou” cycling circuit is about 20 kilometres long and is considered suitable for families with children. Hrbovská bašta is a named stop on the route. As route conditions may change, it is advisable to check the route in advance. A walk from Hrbov to Velký Hrádeček first follows a red-marked trail towards Třebanice, then continues along forest paths to the hillfort. Check the trail markings and conditions on site. The two options offer different experiences: the cycling route is a circuit of an approximate stated length, while the walk leads to a specific destination.

If you are considering Hrbov as a destination, this distinction can help with your planning: you can focus on archaeological history and architecture, the valley and rock formations, or an activity by bike or on foot. When looking for a holiday rental in Hrbov, you can first decide which of these interests you want to shape your trip.
