Mirotice’s cultural history is reflected in a variety of landmarks: a memorial in a painter’s birthplace, a church with construction phases spanning two centuries, and historic houses near the square. These offer different ways to explore the town as you plan your trip: art and commemorative history, architecture and—as another thematic option—a route with stops highlighting nature and archaeology.

Memorial to Mikoláš Aleš and Matěj Kopecký

The Památník Mikoláše Alše a Matěje Kopeckého is located in Mikoláš Aleš’s birthplace near the square in Mirotice. There, you can learn about the life and work of the painter Aleš and the puppeteer Kopecký. These two figures offer different perspectives: painting on the one hand, puppetry on the other. Visits are possible by prior telephone arrangement on 382 229 101. For operational reasons, visits are currently unavailable on weekends and public holidays.

Church and historic houses

Two construction phases can be distinguished at Kostel sv. Jiljí. The church’s present appearance dates to a Pseudo-Romanesque renovation carried out between 1870 and 1872. The Baroque bell tower was built earlier, between 1753 and 1756, replacing an older wooden structure. The church towers often appear in drawings by Mikoláš Aleš. In this way, the building’s history connects with a motif that also features in his work.

Měšťanský dům also stands near the square. The house dates from the early 17th century and has a mansard roof. Its façade was remodeled in the Baroque style, with an attic and stucco decorations as part of its design. Dům zvaný Rytířský is also located near the square: it is a Renaissance house believed to date from the 17th century. Surviving painted façades and stucco decorations characterize its description. When comparing the two, it is worth looking at their different details: the mansard roof and Baroque-remodeled façade here, and the surviving painted façades of a Renaissance house there.

Jewish cemetery and access

The Jewish cemetery, Židovský hřbitov, was established before 1647. Approximately 250 tombstones have survived there to this day. The cemetery is locked; the Mirotice municipal office can arrange access upon request. Bear this in mind if you include the cemetery in your trip plans.

Another perspective on the region

Alšova stezka offers a different thematic focus. It is suitable for hiking and mountain biking, and its stops showcase the region’s historical, natural and archaeological features. This lets you weigh up different interests: the buildings and memorial offer a way to explore architecture, art and commemorative history, while the route foregrounds physical activity and local features. The perspective you choose to emphasize can help shape the character of your trip to Mirotice.
