Okrouhlá Radouň brings together local cultural heritage, the history of uranium mining and practical starting points for a cycling tour. The memorial to the victims of the First World War and the adjoining park, the Chapel of St. Wenceslas and the overgrown spoil heap each represent different aspects of the village’s history. There is also a cycling tour with a named stop in the village. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between them: the cultural heritage designation applies to the memorial and park, the chapel has its own building history, and the spoil heap points to mining that took place over a limited period. The cycling tour is titled “SKRÝCHOVY, RADOUNĚ A ČERTŮV KÁMEN”; after the section from Kubalov, it leads to Okrouhlá Radouň and lists the stop “Okrouhlá Radouň – památná lípa”. The route description was last updated on 27 January 2022; check the details before planning, as route information may change. The Radouň Rally offers a different reason to visit: for the 2026 edition, its service zone was located in Okrouhlá Radouň. The organizer publishes overviews of the special stages, as well as information to help spectators find their way and access points along the route. The two formats answer different planning questions: the cycling tour focuses on the section from Kubalov and its named stop, while the rally focuses on the special stages and spectator guidance. If you are planning a visit for the rally, check the organizer’s dates and route information in advance.
Cultural heritage and building history
The memorial to the victims of the First World War and the adjoining park are part of the cultural heritage of the municipality of Okrouhlá Radouň. A municipal resolution in 2011 recorded this designation. The smaller Chapel of St. Wenceslas has its own timeline: the municipality built it in 2012, and it was consecrated on 28 September that year. In 2022, the municipality had a bell tower built at the chapel, using a grant from the South Bohemian Region.
For exploring local history, these offer two distinct perspectives: the memorial and park are notable for their municipal designation as cultural heritage, while the chapel has a sequence of construction, consecration and later structural addition.
The spoil heap and the history of uranium mining
Okrouhlá Radouň – halda is an overgrown spoil heap from uranium mining; mining at the site took place from 1972 to 1989. Its geological formation and history of use are intertwined: the spoil heap is both a geological site and a remnant of uranium extraction. Here, the focus is on a clearly defined period, rather than another building or consecration history. This makes it quite different from the chapel when choosing a theme to explore: here the focus is on the industrial past, while the chapel tells the story of its construction, consecration and bell tower.
