Cultural monuments, cycling routes and landscapes offer different ways to experience Malsching. The Srdce Ježíšova Church and Thumberg Chapel represent specific chapters of architectural history; several named cycling routes pass over or through Malšín.
Church and historical building phases
The former early Gothic Church of St. Markéta is now called Srdce Ježíšova. The church and its surrounding wall are listed as cultural monuments. The sacristy clearly dates from the second half of the 13th century. The former Church of St. Markéta was first mentioned in writing in 1339. The church was remodelled in 1593; a Baroque transformation followed at the end of the 17th century, with further alterations in the second half of the 19th century.
The date of the sacristy and the year 1339 refer to different things: one concerns a building element, the other the first written mention of the former church. The later renovations are separate milestones. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the building element, the written record and the changes made in subsequent centuries.
Chapels and places to rest
The pilgrimage chapel of Panny Marie Pomocné was built on Turmberg in 1856 and lies 450 m south of the church. Its location is thus identified both by Turmberg and in relation to the church. The chapel is notable for its construction date and a specific point of reference.
Thumberg Chapel is a prominent landmark in Malsching and a cultural monument. Grille doors let visitors look inside the small church building; check during your visit whether this is possible on site. At the site of the former guard castle by Thumberg Chapel, there are two benches with views to the south. There is also a covered rest area and a rubbish bin. The benches and rest area make this a clearly identifiable place to take a break.
Landscape and traces on Turmberg
Remains of a rampart that once surrounded the former tower or castle complex can be seen in the terrain around Turmberg. About half of Malšín’s cadastral area is forested; a large part is used for agriculture as meadows and pastures. The landscape therefore combines wooded areas with agricultural grassland.
From Tumberg, there are far-reaching views to the south across a hilly, wooded landscape with meadows. The area figure and the view answer different questions: the cadastral area gives an overview of land use, while the view from Tumberg describes a specific direction and landscape. Together, they provide both an orientation to the area and a particular viewpoint.
Cycling routes through and over Malšín
The Krumlovská cycling route passes over Malšín. The Velotrail 1–Frymbursko runs through Malšín. Malšín is also on the 42.3 km Vyšší Brod–Malšín–Frymburk–Hořice na Šumavě cycling route.
There are different points of reference for choosing a route: Krumlovská and Velotrail 1–Frymbursko are two further route options; the route via Vyšší Brod, Malšín, Frymburk and Hořice na Šumavě is listed as 42.3 km long.
