Rosenberg (Rožmberk nad Vltavou) lies in the Vltava Valley. Rožmberk Castle, the Church of St. Nicholas, the Old Jewish Cemetery and remnants of the town fortifications offer different ways to explore the town’s history. The nearby Dolní Jílovice Nature Reserve adds a distinct natural dimension: remnants of a natural beech-fir forest are preserved there. When choosing the focus of your stay, both architectural and urban history and the surrounding landscape are worth considering.

Rožmberk Castle: Founding, Architecture and Ownership History

The castle dates from the mid-13th century and is one of the oldest castles of the Vítkovci family. Its present appearance is the result of a renovation in the Romantic Gothic style. Its founding and present architectural character therefore belong to different historical periods: the castle is documented from an early date, while its current appearance reflects a later redesign.

The castle’s main tour route introduces the Buquoy family, which owned the castle from 1620 until the end of the Second World War. This ownership history provides a clear chronological point of reference alongside the castle’s early origins. Visitors interested in the development of an individual building can distinguish its founding period, later design and ownership history.

Jakobínka Tower: Views and Access

The Jakobínka Tower is the only surviving remnant of the former Upper Rožmberk Castle. The climb involves just under 170 steps and offers views of the entire double castle complex of Rožmberk and the surrounding landscape.

The tower can only be accessed as part of a guided tour and access may be subject to seasonal conditions. Check the current tour arrangements before your visit if you plan to climb the tower.

Church, Cemetery and Town Fortifications

The Church of St. Nicholas was first mentioned in writing in 1271. The Late Gothic building was constructed in the second half of the 15th century on older foundations. The two dates therefore refer to different historical aspects: the early written record and the later construction phase.

The Old Jewish Cemetery is a surviving testament to Jewish settlement and the last reminder in Rosenberg itself of the longstanding Jewish tradition. Around 24 gravestones remain; the oldest dates from the mid-18th century.

Remnants of 14th-century town fortifications survive in the southern part of the town. These three historical sites highlight different aspects: ecclesiastical architectural history, remembrance of the Jewish tradition and medieval town fortifications. The town’s history can thus be explored through more than just the castle.

The Vltava Valley and Dolní Jílovice Nature Reserve

Rosenberg’s location in the Vltava Valley provides a geographical reference point. The nearby Dolní Jílovice Nature Reserve contains remnants of a natural beech-fir forest. This adds another topic to the town’s historical focus: a protected landscape with a relic of its original forest. If you are balancing cultural and nature interests during your stay, this distinction offers a practical starting point for planning.
