Planá U Českých Budějovic offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the rectangular village square, architectural details and the history of the mill, as well as the cycle path from Boršov nad Vltavou to Planá. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is the landmark of the square; farmsteads and houses preserve different forms of the settlement structure. At Touškův mlýn, historic architectural features are complemented by the history of hydropower. This gives you the chance to decide whether architecture, technical history or cycling should be the focus of your trip.

Village Square: Settlement Structure and Architectural Styles

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was consecrated in 1908 and is the landmark of the rectangular village square. On the southern side, the angled layouts of farmsteads Nos. 16, 17 and 18 preserve a traditional settlement structure. The square therefore tells a story not only through individual façades: the arrangement of the farmyards is also part of its historic character. On the northern side, houses are predominantly aligned with their gable ends facing the square, with triangular gables and simple façades. Gable-end orientation means that the gable side faces the square. House No. 45, dated 1849, also has a vaulted gateway. This offers a way to view the architectural styles at both settlement and building-detail level: angled farmyard layouts in the south, and gable forms and the gateway of House No. 45 in the north.

Touškův mlýn and Sad smíření

The older building of Touškův mlýn is single-storey and features architectural elements dating from before 1850. It also has a technical history with two points of reference in time: the mill already had a power station in 1930, and today it houses a small hydropower plant. Historic architectural features and the history of power generation thus emerge as distinct aspects of the mill complex.

Sad smíření offers a different perspective. The park, which covers several hectares, was created at his own expense by local entrepreneur Petr Petrlík. Its origins can therefore be attributed to a specific person; alongside architecture and technical history, the park offers its own way to explore the history of the village.

Cycle Path from Boršov nad Vltavou to Planá

The cycle path from Boršov nad Vltavou to Planá is 3,500 metres long; the turn-off to Homole adds another 600 metres. The two distances can be factored into your plans separately: the main route and the turn-off are distinct sections. A report from May 2022 stated that the cycle path had been officially approved and was fully open for use. Check the current status before setting out.

Different Ways to Focus Your Stay

When choosing the focus of your trip, consider what kind of discovery appeals to you: the village square and houses offer insights into settlement structure and architecture, while Touškův mlýn brings together architectural features and the history of power generation. The cycle path can be planned around its main route and turn-off; the park adds to the history of the village through its specific origins and Petr Petrlík's role in its creation. If you are looking for a suitable destination, you can weigh up architectural heritage, technology and cycling.
