Dlouhý vrch gives Dubiken a clear landmark in the landscape: the mountain is 551 metres high and forms part of the gentle Lišovský práh ridge. From the Dubičné viewpoint, the view stretches across the entire city of České Budějovice. At Dlouhý vrch, views, paragliding and winter sports offer different ways to experience the mountain. In the village, the chapel built in 1834 adds a historic touch to the village square; silver mines, an adit and the remains of a water channel add to the picture.
Viewpoint and route to Dlouhý vrch
The journey to the viewpoint can be divided into two sections. You can drive to the foot of Dlouhý vrch; from there, a direct walking path of about 500 metres leads to the viewpoint. This approximate distance gives the final section a clear sense of scale. The distinction is useful for planning: the drive ends at the foot of the mountain, and the rest of the way is on foot. Whether to focus on the viewpoint or the village’s history can be treated as a separate choice for your stay.
Paragliding and winter sports
Paragliding is still practised at Dlouhý vrch. For anyone interested in flying, it offers a distinct mountain activity alongside the panorama. The winter facilities are also described in specific terms: the ski slope is groomed with a piste basher and is illuminated for night skiing. There are also two ski lifts: a 71-metre children’s lift and a 340-metre main lift. The considerable difference in length gives a tangible sense of the size of the two facilities. If skiing is important to your trip, check in advance whether the lifts will be operating on your dates.
Traces of silver mining and the water channel
The David Mine was the largest of the local silver mines and was about 80 metres deep. The approximate depth gives a sense of scale, while its status as the largest local mine records its particular place in the history of silver mining. The Terezina adit was driven into the wooded valley of the Vrátecký potok; the valley was formerly known as Tereziným údolím. This local history therefore includes both the named mine and an adit in a valley with a former name.
In addition, the remains of the historic water channel are still visible in the Děkan and Prantlák woods near Dubičné. The two woodland names locate this trace in the landscape; the channel is a distinct historical landmark alongside the silver mines and the adit. To explore the area’s history, it is useful to distinguish between two themes: mining on the one hand and the water channel on the other.
The chapel on the village square
A different aspect of local history can be found on the village square: the chapel of Saint Anthony and the Virgin Mary, built in 1834, stands there. Its location places the building right in the village; the mining sites and water channel, by contrast, are further historical landmarks in the surrounding area. Its date of construction and dedication give the chapel a specific historical and cultural context. Anyone interested in the built heritage of the village will find a different focus here than at Dlouhý vrch or among the traces of mining.
