Strašnice offers different points of interest for a stay: a self-guided educational trail focuses on local history, while individual buildings, a cemetery, and a sports and recreation area offer other themes. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these different highlights and the seasonal ice rink.
Explore the educational trail independently
The Strašnická educational trail is 3.5 kilometres long and can be explored independently, without a guide. Eleven information panels cover the history of Strašnice and significant buildings, including Trmalova vila, Foersterova vila, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The length and panels provide different points of reference: the kilometre figure describes the extent of the trail, while the panels structure its historical content. This makes the trail a more clearly defined self-guided option than a general recommendation for a walk. For travellers who want to combine architecture and local history, the named buildings are specific themes along the route.
Buildings and historical landmarks
Strašnické krematorium opened in 1932 and is the largest crematorium in Europe by area. The opening year and the size figure answer different questions: one dates its opening, while the other explicitly describes its dimensions in terms of area. Bečvářův statek represents a different type of building; it is the only preserved farmstead in Strašnice. The two places therefore cannot be compared using the same information: the crematorium is described by its opening year and area, while the farmstead is noted for its preserved status. A farmstead is an agricultural homestead.
Vinohradský hřbitov was established in 1885 and today covers almost 10 hectares. The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in the cemetery serves both as a funeral hall and as a lapidarium for rare original tomb sculptures. A lapidarium is a collection of stone artworks or monuments; here, the term refers to tomb sculptures. The funeral hall describes the chapel's ceremonial purpose, while the lapidarium refers to its connection with the sculptures. In the area around Staré Strašnice, Červenkova kaple has also been registered as a cultural monument since December 2012.
Sport and seasonal leisure
Gutovka is a multifunctional sports and recreation area in Strašnice. In winter, one of the playing fields is turned into an ice rink. This use is seasonal, so check before your trip whether the rink will be operating during your intended visit.
This makes a practical difference when choosing what to focus on: the educational trail offers named points of interest and a fixed length, whereas with the ice rink, the season and current operating status matter as well as the activity itself. This means a cultural and historical visit can be planned differently from a winter leisure outing.
