Jinonice brings together an early medieval hillfort, a Baroque-influenced farmstead complex and an archaeological and historical route. This means that a stay here offers different scales side by side: the spatial dimensions of an early fortification, individual buildings with a clear historical context, and a route with an approximate duration. Other features include the Vidoule Natural Monument, a skatepark and a transport interchange with metro and rail access. When planning, you can first consider whether cultural history, exercise or a mix of the two should be the focus.

Hillfort and farmstead: two historical scales

The Butovice hillfort site covers about nine hectares and lies on a prominent spur above the valley of the ProkopskĂ˝ potok stream. To the northeast and east, the site was protected by two transverse lines of fortifications. In the 8th and 9th centuries, it was a centre of early medieval settlement. The combination of its area, topography and fortifications makes the spatial layout of the hillfort easy to understand and establishes it as a settlement centre of its time.

The Jinonický dvorec is mentioned as early as 1088. In 1685, the Jinonický dvorec and the château were renovated at the expense of Jan Adolf Schwarzenberg; both have retained the character of an early Baroque estate from the late 17th century. The dates refer to different historical points: 1088 is the estate’s earliest mention, while 1685 marks the renovation of the estate and château. This makes it possible to distinguish the area’s early history from its later architectural character, rather than merging both dates into a single construction phase.

The grounds of the Church of St Lawrence include a cemetery enclosed by a perimeter wall with two gates. A mortuary in the northern part projects beyond the wall. The enclosure, the two gates and the building projecting northward thus shape the layout of the grounds. Another leap in time takes us to 1945: during the Prague Uprising, Sokolovna Praha Jinonice served as the seat of the local command and the centre of all revolutionary forces. The historical perspective therefore extends from early medieval settlement to a specific role during the uprising.

Route and other highlights

The route “A Journey to Archaeological and Historical Monuments” leads from the eastern edge of Stodůlky through the Jinonice area to Hlubočepy. It is estimated to take about three and a half hours. You can explore it on foot or by bicycle using walking paths in Prokopské údolí and the surrounding area. Treat the duration as an estimate for planning purposes and check the route signage before setting out.

Vidoule offers a different focus and is one of the natural monuments mentioned in Jinonice. This adds a nature-related theme alongside the area’s archaeological and architectural history. For a sporting focus, there was a skatepark on Butovická Street: after its renovation in 2023, it covered about 500 m² and offered various features for both experienced and less advanced riders. The route, natural monument and skatepark cater to different interests; you can consider them as separate points of reference when planning your stay.

The Jinonice transport interchange has access to Metro Line B and the Praha-Jinonice railway station. This is a practical point of reference for planning your journeys. As services may change, check the current timetable before travelling.
