Ošelín offers two distinct interests: its local and architectural history, and its named walking and cycling routes. The fortress, castle and Church of St Bartholomew provide specific points of reference for its history; at the same time, cycle route No. 2222 passes through the village, and a walking section runs from the railway station to U Mže. Together, these offer two concrete ways to experience your stay: learning about the area’s history and getting outdoors.

Local history and architecture

Ošelín was first mentioned in 1379, when the village belonged to the knight Oldřich of Ošelín. Before 1413, Ošelín passed into the possession of Habart of Malenice and later Petr the Younger Kovář of Strhaře. From 1380 to 1402, Oldřich was a co-patron of the church in Meclov. This co-patronage extends the historical perspective beyond Ošelín. Ošelín’s fortress is documented in writing from 1497. The present-day castle building dates approximately to the second half of the 18th century; the Bigatto family owned the castle until 1935.

The dates relate to different aspects: the first mention, the documented fortress, the construction period of the present-day castle and its ownership history cannot be reduced to a single building chronology.

The Church of St Bartholomew also reflects several periods: it has Gothic origins and was extensively remodelled in the Baroque style in 1722. The contrast between its origins and later remodelling is more important for its architectural context than a single style label. Alongside the history of the fortress and castle, it represents another distinct chapter in the village’s architecture. The church is a specific point of reference if you want to explore Ošelín’s architectural history.

The Mže and its trails

The Mže flows near Ošelín, and Ošelín railway station is located above its right bank. The river and station provide a brief sense of the area’s geography.

Cycle route No. 2222 passes through Ošelín and Německý mlýn and is part of a 41 km route. The green hiking route No. 3607 runs 1 km from Ošelín railway station to the U Mže trail junction. These offer two routes of different lengths to choose from. The 1 km figure refers to the short hiking section from the station, while 41 km is the length of the route that cycle route 2222 forms part of. This is not a comparison between two options for the same route, but between travelling on foot and by bike. This distinction can help you plan your day, separating a short walk from a much longer cycling route.

Plan your stay around your interests

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ošelín, first decide how you want culture and outdoor activities to shape your days. The local history and architecture offer a cultural focus, while the two named routes represent different kinds and lengths of activity. Tailor your search to the reason for your trip that you want to prioritise: history, a short walk or the cycle route as a longer outing.
