The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dominates Kšice’s village green. The area also has protected burial mound fields of different dates and sizes, as well as two cycling routes that pass through Kšice and Lomnička. Those planning a stay can choose to focus on the church, the archaeological heritage, or a cycling trip.
Church and archaeological heritage
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a registered protected cultural monument and a Baroque replacement building. Its prominent position on the village green, its protected status, and its architectural style offer several points of reference for understanding the building. The burial mound fields add archaeological evidence to this picture of the area’s cultural heritage, differing considerably in their extent and dating.
Čertův kámen is a protected and well-preserved Hallstatt-period burial mound field with a clearly visible, regularly defined outline. It comprises 63 large and small burial mounds. A substantial part of the field is covered by dense pine forest; a clear-cut strip runs through its southwestern section. Forest conditions may change. The burial field lies south of the forest road connecting Záchlumí and Kšice.
Na Žalostném is a protected, as-yet-undated burial mound field in the forest between Cebiv, Záchlumí, and Kšice. It comprises four to six burial mounds, some of which are still clearly visible. The precise location helps with orientation: Na Žalostném lies between the three villages, while Čertův kámen is south of the connecting forest road.
Stélka is a protected burial mound field from the Late Bronze Age, with archaeological continuity spanning 200 to 250 years. It covers an area of about 350 by 100 metres and contains 42 burial mounds. Some are low and inconspicuous. The figures therefore describe not only the size of the field; differences in height also affect how clearly individual mounds stand out.
A brief comparison helps distinguish the sites: Čertův kámen dates to the Hallstatt period, Stélka to the Late Bronze Age, and Na Žalostném is undated so far. The number of mounds ranges from four to six at Na Žalostném to 63 at Čertův kámen, with Stélka in between at 42.
Cycling routes and getting there
Two named cycling routes pass through Kšice and Lomnička: the “K vodě dvakrát přes Hadovku” circular cycling route and the “Stříbro a Kladrubská katedrála” cycling route. If you plan to ride one of them, check the local trail surfaces and signage before setting off. This will help you match your choice of route to the conditions along each section.
Bus services run to Kšice, with a stop in the town centre. Rail connections are available on line 177, with a station in Lomnička. From there, it is possible to travel towards Plzeň and Bezdružice. The distinction between the named stops is useful when planning your trip: the bus stops in the centre of Kšice, while the railway station is in Lomnička. Transport services may change, so check current timetables before departure.
