Butov brings together a range of travel interests: seasonal water activities on the Hracholuská Reservoir, cycling routes and the history of the Butovská mohyla, which dates from the Middle Bronze Age. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these options by type. Water sports and boating depend on the season and current conditions; the cycling connections and archaeological traces offer other points of interest. This way, you can decide whether water-based experiences or a combination of cycling and culture should be the focus of your days.

Water by the Reservoir Shore

The BUTOV recreation centre is set in attractive woodland on the shore of the Hracholuská Reservoir. Swimming, sailing and windsurfing are possible there; anglers can also enjoy their hobby by the shore. Swimming and water sports are seasonal options, and swimming conditions may vary. Check local conditions before planning a day of swimming or water sports. If you plan to fish, check the applicable regulations and permits in advance, as these may change. Choosing between the activities also involves different considerations: for a day on the water, seasonal conditions matter, while fishing is also subject to the rules in force at the time.

A Sightseeing Boat on the Hracholuská Reservoir

The Plzeň sightseeing boat operates seasonally on the Hracholusky–Butov route, stopping at the main campsites. It has a capacity of 150 people and covers a 20 km route. If you would like to include a boat trip in your plans, check the latest departure times before travelling. This offers a different way to experience the water from swimming, sailing or windsurfing: instead of an activity by the shore, the focus is on a seasonal journey between Hracholusky and Butov. Stops at the main campsites are also part of the route description.

Two Cycling Routes with Different Connections to Butov

Cycle Route 2214 passes by Butov. Cycle Route 2222 runs from Výrov via Nový Dvůr, Nynkov, Řebří, Ošelín, Svojšín, Pytlov, Záchlumí, Kšice and Únehle to Butov. The difference is clear for planning purposes: on Route 2214, you pass Butov, while the sequence of places on Route 2222 leads to Butov. The sections listed give you an indication of which route suits your plans. Before setting out on a cycling trip, it is also worth checking current route conditions; local conditions may change.

The Butovská Mohyla and Its History

The Butovská mohyla dates from the Middle Bronze Age, approximately the 16th to 14th centuries BC. Otto Eichhorn, a professor and museum director based in Stříbro, excavated it in 1936. In 2013, staff from the Západočeské muzeum v Plzni excavated and reconstructed a burial mound near Butov. These historical details give the area a different sense of time from the seasonal activities on the water. If you are interested in cultural history, the Bronze Age story adds another dimension to Butov beyond boating, water sports and cycling.
