A restored statue of Saint George stands in Studanka’s village square—a tangible starting point for exploring the village’s history, which also encompasses Georg Böhm, folklore and a cycle route.
Village Square, Monument and Stone Carving
Following extensive restoration, the statue now stands in the village square. It is dated to 1850 and has been protected as a cultural monument since 2008. Georg Böhm was born on 31 December 1789 in Svobodka, one of seven children. He moved to Studanka in 1830 and devoted himself there to artistic stone carving, particularly between 1830 and 1850. His works include mainly stone crosses 4 to 5 metres high, richly decorated columns with statues, and wayside shrines. The statue of Saint George, created in 1850, is considered the high point of his work. Its specific date is thus closely connected with the history of Böhm’s work. The stated height of the crosses conveys a sense of their scale; columns with statues and wayside shrines also show other forms of his work. The year 1850 and protection since 2008 mark two different dates: the first relates to the statue, while the second marks its protection as a cultural monument.
Early History and Folklore
The early history has two distinct reference points. The probable establishment of Schőnbrunn – Krásné Studánky as a knight’s seat is dated to around 1300; Studanka is first mentioned in writing in 1407.
At the celebrations marking the municipality’s anniversary, the wayside shrine Boží muka was unveiled and adorned with ceramic images of saints. The Studánecká “Staročeská konopická” is a folklore festival and is currently one of the most important activities of the Medulky women’s association. Musicians accompany its procession. Here you can encounter different cultural forms: a wayside shrine with images of saints and a folklore procession accompanied by music.
Location, Cycle Route and Landscape
Studanka lies west of Tachov on road III/19910. Cycle Route 2138 of the Lučina microregion runs through the municipality. A forest with the Rozsocha hill lies to the southwest.
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to weigh up what matters most to you: are you more interested in stone carving and cultural history, or in the cycle route and landscape? This can help you decide whether Studanka suits your travel plans. If you are visiting for a specific event, plan for Konopická differently than you would for a cycling trip: check the announced festival dates in advance. If you plan to ride Route 2138, check its current course and local conditions before setting off. This lets you factor the folklore event in as a possible reason for your trip, while taking current conditions into account when planning your day on the cycle route.
