Lochousice is ideal for an exploration that begins at the village square: here, a chapel dating from 1847, late Neoclassical farmsteads and two ponds along the Touškovský potok come together. The village combines distinctive architecture with a long settlement history and a riding club that offers recreational and competitive riding. You can focus your stay on architecture, local history or equestrian sports.

Chapel and Farmsteads on the Village Square

At the centre of the village square stands the large, masonry Chapel of St Florian (sv. Florián). Its rectangular nave and projecting two-storey tower give the building a distinctive form; the chapel was built in 1847. Together with the many masonry farmsteads lining the square, it forms the architectural focal point of Lochousice. The chapel and its enclosed plot are protected. It provides a fixed point of reference in the village landscape for local history and architecture.

Many of the farmsteads still retain their gates, masonry granaries or elaborately decorated façades of the residential buildings, for the most part. The architectural details are spread across gates, granaries and houses rather than concentrated in a single building. Barns stand on the outer edge of the village and at the back of the farmsteads, apart from the other buildings. This makes it possible to distinguish the layout of the farmsteads around the village square from the location of the barns at the edges.

From Prehistory to the First Written Record

The area around Lochousice was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as numerous archaeological finds attest. The village was first mentioned in 1186. The archaeological prehistory and the first written mention belong to two different layers of the village’s history: finds point to early settlement, while 1186 marks the first recorded mention. Historically, Lochousice belonged to the Kladruby Monastery. Together with the surviving farmsteads and the chapel, this offers a glimpse into several periods of the village’s history.

Water and Terrain

The Touškovský potok flows through Lochousice; two ponds lie along its course, right by the village square. Here, the watercourse and the village centre are part of the same area. The terrain is flat to gently sloping. Two distinct features therefore sit side by side: the waters by the village square and the general character of the terrain. If you are interested in a distinctly rural village layout, the connection between water, square and buildings offers a tangible point of reference.

Equestrian Sports and Sports Field

The Jezdecký spolek Lochousice (Lochousice Riding Club) caters to both recreational and competitive riding. Newcomers interested in the sport are also welcome. Recreational and competitive riding offer two different ways to engage with the same subject: enjoying equestrian sports and exploring their competitive side. A special tradition is the “Hubertova jízda”, which takes place in Lochousice almost every year. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the date for the relevant year.

For sports and exercise, there is also the Lochousice multipurpose sports field. It is locked most of the time; borrowing the keys must be arranged in advance, either by phone or in person. Keep this requirement in mind if you would like to use the field.
