A stay in Ostruzno combines a direct literary connection with traces of cultural history and a landscape in the Kašperská vrchovina Nature Park. The village is the setting of Karel Klostermann’s novel “Světák z Podlesí”. There are also buildings with clearly documented dates, religious memorial sites in different locations, and views of the surrounding landscape. This combination is particularly interesting when deciding where to travel: in Ostruzno, culture is reflected both in its literary connection and in its quarrying history and religious buildings.

Chapel, School and Quarrying History

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1860, stands in the village square. The former Karel Klostermann School is located below the chapel. It was built in 1874 and is now privately owned. The village square and the school building are therefore two distinct, clearly located points of reference in the village’s history.

In 1874, work began at the Kokšovy quarry near Ostruzno to extract small stone blocks for making monuments. The construction of the former school and the quarrying work therefore date to the same year, but represent different aspects of the village’s history. There is also a wayside shrine at the end of Ostruzno in the direction of Albrechtice, another religious memorial site on the outskirts of the village.

The chapel and the school were built 14 years apart: the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates from 1860, and the former school from 1874. Stone-block extraction at Kokšovy also began in the same year. Thus, the history of sacred buildings, school construction and quarrying are three distinct subjects.

Religious Buildings in Different Locations

A roadside niche chapel stands outside Ostruzno, on the road from Sušice to Nezdice. A statue of the Virgin Mary is set in the niche on its front. On the south side, a longer poem about unrequited love is displayed on a wooden heart. The statue of Mary and the poem offer two different ways of interpreting the structure: a religious image and a poetic text. The niche chapel also affords a beautiful view to the southeast.

The religious memorial sites are also distinguished by their locations. The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in the village square, the niche chapel outside Ostruzno on the road from Sušice to Nezdice, and the wayside shrine at the end of the village in the direction of Albrechtice. The village square, the roadside outside the settlement and the edge of the village thus form three different points of reference. The chapel, niche chapel and wayside shrine also differ in their architectural forms. These locations are as helpful for finding your way around as the different religious motifs.

Forests, Mountain Meadows and Views

The landscape around Ostruzno includes deep forests interspersed with mountain meadows. From the surrounding area, there are views across the interior of the country as well as of the Šumava mountains Ždánov and Javorník, both of which are over 1,000 metres high. The southeast-facing view from the niche chapel is a separate, specific viewpoint. This makes it possible to distinguish between a view in a particular direction and the broader panorama from the surrounding area.
