In Modrava, woodworking and cultural monuments meet several clearly distinct route options. At Dřevák, wood takes center stage; routes can be categorized by factors such as surface, length, season and mode of transport. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without confusing the different circular routes with one another.

Discover wood for yourself at Dřevák

Dřevák is a visitor center dedicated to wood in Modrava. Interactive exhibitions showcase the properties and uses of the material. Visitors can work with wood in the equipped workshop; the center also offers creative workshops aimed primarily at children. The exhibition, hands-on woodworking and creative workshops provide different ways to explore the same subject: you can learn about the material or work with it yourself.

This distinction is also useful when planning: the exhibition offers information about wood, while the workshop and creative workshops involve practical or creative activities. The courses are aimed mainly at children; this describes their target audience and does not automatically mean that every offering is suitable for every family.

Sawmill and cultural monuments

Binertova pila in Modrava is an immovable cultural monument. The site formerly served as a sawmill for resonance wood. The wood was used for soundboards, bracing in grand pianos and upright pianos, and their keyboards. This makes it possible to connect the sawmill’s historical significance directly with the uses of the material: resonance wood was used not just in a single component, but in various parts of keyboard instruments.

Klostermannova chata in Modrava is also a cultural monument. Together with Binertova pila, it offers a glimpse of two named cultural monuments in the village. Their shared designation as cultural monuments is a useful point of reference if you would like to include Modrava’s cultural heritage in your travel plans alongside activities at Dřevák.

Choose circular routes by surface and length

The Modrava–Javoří Pila–Tříjezerní slať–Modrava circular route runs entirely on paved asphalt paths. It is also suitable for families with small children in strollers. This makes it a specific option if you need to take a stroller into account when choosing a route. Another route with a stated length is the Modrava–Filipova Huť educational trail: it forms part of the 3.5-kilometer Modrava–Filipova Huť–Modrava circular route.

Šumava National Park lists the 7-kilometer Modrava–Tříjezerní slať–Rokyta hiking route as a trail maintained in winter. Since maintenance is a practical consideration for winter hiking, check the information again before your trip. The route length and stated winter maintenance offer different selection criteria from the paved surface and stroller suitability of the route via Javoří Pila.

Another option is the 15-kilometer Modravský circular route: Modrava–Březník–Cikánská slať–Modrava. The Modrava–Rokyta–Tříjezerní slať–Rybárna–Modrava route also runs through the Vydra valley. These two routes already differ in their named itineraries, so when choosing, you can consider which places or landscapes you would like to include.

The Vydra and a nearby summer-season facility

In Modrava, the Modravský potok, Filipohuťský potok and Roklanský potok join to form the Vydra. Together with the route through the Vydra valley, these offer two different points of reference for the landscape: the confluence in Modrava and a route through the river valley.

At nearby Březník, a Šumava National Park information center and refreshments are available during the summer season. Both are seasonal; check before your trip whether they will be available during your visit. Comparing the seasonal services and routes also helps you keep track of which details relate to a particular trail, route length or summer operation.

For a cycling trip, the 25.7-kilometer Srní–Javoří Pila–Modrava–Filipova Huť–Antýgl–Srní circular route is listed. It is designated as a cycling route, clearly distinguishing it from the hiking trails and walking routes described here. The stated lengths of the 3.5-, 7- and 15-kilometer routes, along with the cycling loop’s length, help you compare the route options that best suit your plans.
