Koldín combines an early 17th-century castle with archaeological traces and trails that run through the village. The Chlumek hillfort site lies in the forest east of Koldín; the Choceňská educational trail and a cycling route from Vysoké Mýto to Sudslava pass through Koldín. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests: the village’s history or getting active on foot and by bike.

Castle and Chlumek hillfort site

The Chlumek hillfort site lies in a forest 1.3 kilometres east of Koldín. Its surviving traces include a presumably rectangular tower measuring about 10 × 9 metres. There is also a ditch up to 3 metres deep and a wide rampart that is damaged in places. The terrain features are also well preserved. The site thus offers a different way to explore local history than a castle: alongside the structural traces, the shape of the terrain is one of its notable features.

Koldín Castle dates from the early 17th century. It was built near a fortress that has not survived to this day. Nearby, a cross dating from 1889 stands beside a chapel. These three historical features offer different points of interest: the castle as a building, the hillfort site with its traces in the landscape, and the cross as a small, dated detail.

Walking and cycling routes

The 35-kilometre Choceňská educational trail passes through Koldín and is suitable for cyclists and walkers. It comprises two circular routes of 16 and 19 kilometres. The routes differ in length by three kilometres, giving you a concrete comparison to help with planning. Near Kostelecké Horky, there is also a walking loop of about 3 kilometres. It is a considerably shorter option than the two longer loops, but it is located near Kostelecké Horky.

The route is well marked and has 19 information panels. The route description dates from 2013; check the current route before setting out. You should also check the markings and panels on site. Another option for cyclists is the route from Vysoké Mýto to Sudslava, which also passes through Koldín. Check its route locally before setting off. Both routes offer a reason to include Koldín in your trip.

Landscape and trip planning

Koldín is surrounded by meadows, ponds and mixed forests. This landscape adds another dimension to a stay focused on local history. Together with the routes, it gives you a choice between exploring the village’s history and following trails that can be used both on foot and by bike. For planning, you can use the stated lengths of the Choceňská educational trail for comparison; the cycling route to Sudslava offers a separate alternative.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering what you want to focus on during your stay: the history of the castle and hillfort site, or a trip that includes Koldín as a stop along the way. You can choose between the circular routes based on the stated distances; Kostelecké Horky is the reference point given for the shorter walking loop. This keeps your accommodation search aligned with your travel plans, rather than combining different activities into a single fixed route.
