Between the floodplain of the Vortovský potok, three ponds and a long-distance cycling route from Brno to Prague, Vortová reveals different sides of itself: protected wetlands, routes for cycling and winter sports, and a locally rooted cultural heritage. When planning your trip, it is worth looking at the landscape as well as the chapel, carnival traditions and history of glassmaking.

Wetlands and Protected Nature

The Utopenec Nature Reserve encompasses the floodplain of the Vortovský potok between the Utopenec pond and the Hamerská přehrada reservoir. Peatland and wet meadow communities lie along the meandering stream. Wetland plants found here include orchids and bog species. Amphibians, reptiles and wetland birds find a habitat here; black storks also frequently visit the area to forage. The stream, wet meadows and diverse wildlife shape the character of this protected area.

Návesník is a protected natural monument in the cadastral area of Vortová. Its protected habitats include peatland, fen and wet purple moor-grass communities, as well as Nardus grassland. There is also a pond with sedge stands along its banks and aquatic vegetation. Vortová therefore offers different wetland conservation highlights: at Utopenec, the floodplain along the meandering stream; at Návesník, pond and bank vegetation as well.

Cycling, Hiking and Ponds

The long-distance cycling route “Pražská stezka” passes directly through Vortová on its way from Brno to Prague. Cycling trips around the village mainly follow forest roads with little traffic; there are often opportunities to stop at the surrounding ponds along the way. The named long-distance route and cycling in the local area answer different planning questions: one places Vortová on a connection between two cities, while the other describes the character of the local roads. When planning the long-distance route, it is worth checking the current route and conditions, as signage and conditions may change.

The season also provides a clear guide to possible activities: Vortová serves as a starting point for summer hikes and winter ski trips to Žákova hora. Which of these options is right for your trip therefore also depends on whether you are planning a summer walk or a winter ski outing. Check current trail and travel conditions before setting out.

Three ponds are suitable for spending time by the water or swimming. One of them is part of a fishing district of the Český rybářský svaz that is not managed for trout fishing. If you plan to visit the waters, bear in mind that recreational use may depend on local conditions and permits. The ponds therefore feature in different contexts: as places to spend time or swim, and as possible stops on cycling trips.

Chapel, Traditions and Local History

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located in the centre of Vortová and is a landmark building in the village. It was completed in July 1882 and built in the Neo-Romanesque style. If you would like to attend a service, check the relevant announcements; there is no regular service schedule. The chapel’s history can thus be connected to specific details: its central location, completion date and architectural style.

The traditional carnival procession with masks, known locally as “Vostatky,” is still celebrated in Vortová. If you would like to experience the procession, check the date for the year in question; the event may vary. Another chapter in the village’s history is glassmaking, which continued from the 17th century until the 1750s. It therefore dates back further than the completion of the chapel. The built heritage also includes a collection of restored, still-inhabited log houses. The chapel and the log houses offer different points of connection with Vortová’s architectural history.
