Úhřetice can be explored through several distinct features: the municipality lies between the Novohradka and Chrudimka rivers, its first written mention dates from 1392, and signposted local cycling routes pass through the village. Other features include a central chapel, traditional events and an archaeological classification spanning several periods. If you are considering a holiday apartment in Úhřetice, you can weigh up the landscape, history and local activities as different focuses for your stay.

Between Two Rivers

Úhřetice lies between the Novohradka and Chrudimka rivers. The municipality is on the left bank of the Novohradka and the right bank of the Chrudimka; two ponds are also located on the western edge of the village. While the riverbanks define Úhřetice’s position in relation to the two rivers, the ponds lie west of the village. When choosing a place to stay, you can compare this geographical orientation with the specific location of an accommodation.

The Chrudim–Holice railway line runs along the southern edge of Úhřetice.

Local History and the Former Château

The first written mention of Úhřetice dates from 1392. Until 1586, the village remained associated with the Rychmburk estate. After 1586, Markéta Trčková z Lípy established a large farmstead on the southeastern edge of the village. It also included the former château of Úhřetice, which she had built for possible stays in the village. The château burned down in 1807 and was not rebuilt.

Archaeology Around the Tuněchody Brickworks

Another point of historical interest is the “Tuněchody cihelna” archaeological area, classified as ÚAN I and designated an important archaeological site. It lies around the Tuněchody brickworks, mainly to the south, southeast and east; Úhřetice is among the cadastral areas listed. The brickworks itself was declared a cultural monument in 2000.

The archaeological area is associated with the Silesian-Plateau culture, the La Tène period and the Roman Imperial period. It also includes the transition from the Early to the High Middle Ages, as well as the High and Late Middle Ages. Those interested in local history can consider this broad archaeological classification alongside the documented history of the farmstead.

Chapel, Events and Cycling Routes

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas stands in the centre of Úhřetice; it is the village’s only more prominent building. Traditional events include burning witch effigies, masquerade balls, a Three Kings celebration associated with a charitable initiative, and St Nicholas events. Dates and public access may vary. So if you want to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates and access arrangements in advance.

Signposted local cycling routes pass through Úhřetice. Routes, signage and maintenance may change, so check the current route and the condition of the signs before setting out on a bike ride. This allows you to consider cycling as a separate focus in your plans, alongside the village’s historical features.
