To the north of Orel rises Tři Bubny Hill. At its summit stands the Gothic cemetery church of St. George, at an elevation of 302 m. Together with historical traces in the village, the hill and church give Orel a cultural and historical focus. Disc golf and a cycling route that passes through Orel add sporting opportunities. If you are looking for an apartment in Orel, you can decide when planning your trip whether history, activity or both should shape your stay.

Tři Bubny and the Church of St. George

The church and the houses of Tři Bubny lie at the crossroads of the Chrudim–Řestoky–Chrast and Kunčí–Orel–Kočí roads. St. George is first mentioned in 1349 in a document issued by the first Archbishop of Prague, Arnošt of Pardubice. The date places this first mention in the 14th century and connects the church with a historical record that names a specific person.

The church contains 15 stone epitaphs. They commemorate deceased members of the families who owned the Orel estate. Alongside the Gothic church building, they provide a specific link to the family history of the estate. The architecture, first mention and memorial stones each offer a different perspective on the village’s history; they do not all tell the same story.

Fortifications, sculpture and remembrance

The eastern section of the fortification ramparts at Tři Bubny was declared a natural and historical monument in 1923. Only slight variations in the terrain remain of the former Orel fortress, on a circular hill more than 30 m across. Except on the north side, the fortress was surrounded by a moat. The traces of the fortress can therefore be understood mainly through the shape of the terrain and the former moat, rather than through a complete surviving structure.

The statue of Our Lady of Victory in Orel is a Baroque sculpture from the 18th century. A copy of the statue returned to the centre of Orel in 2025. A granite monument bears the names of 16 residents who did not return from the First World War. Together, these memorial sites represent different historical reference points: a former fortification, a Baroque sculpture and a tribute to residents who did not return from the war.

Disc golf and cycling route

The Discgolfové hřiště Orel course opened in 2022 and has 9 holes with a total playing length of 477 m. The necessary equipment can be borrowed for the game, including at the municipal office; playing with your own equipment is also possible. This makes it possible to factor the sporting option into your trip planning using specific details about the holes, playing length and equipment.

Cycling route 4177 also passes through Tři Bubny and Orel. It is 37.5 km long; this figure refers to the entire route, not just the section in Orel. If you plan to cycle it, check the local signage before setting out. Disc golf and the cycling route are different ways to add activity to your stay.
