Kolšov lies in a valley surrounded by forests on three sides. Set in the basin between Dlouhá, Markovice, Brabenečná and Horka, the village is on the western side of a marginal branch of the Úsovská vrchovina. To the north and west, the basin opens onto the plain in the Morava River valley. This landscape provides the setting for a trip in which hiking destinations, cycling routes and architectural history each offer their own focus.

Hiking Trails to Different Destinations

Hiking trails around Kolšov lead toward three different destinations: the ruins of Brníčko Castle, the Cikánský buk beech tree and the Bradlo viewpoint. Brníčko is one of the nearest significant cultural and historical monuments to the village, about 3 km away. This approximate distance gives an indication of how far the monument is; the hiking trails described lead in its direction.

Many people start their hike to Markovice in Kolšov. The route passes over the saddle near neighboring Dlouhá; along the way, there are views of Sudkovský rybník and Bludov, among other places. At the summit, there is a fire pit, benches, a summit logbook and a signpost. The trip is therefore defined by more than just its destination: the route and its views, as well as the facilities mentioned at the summit, are among its described features.

Cycling Connections and Named Rides

A marked cycle route passes through Kolšov. It heads south toward Mohelnice and Litovel, and north toward Hanušovice and Jeseník. There is also a 19 km cycling trip called “Cyklo-výlet za poznáním historie” (Cycling Trip to Discover History), whose route also passes through Kolšov. The two pieces of information offer different guidance: directions are given for the marked cycle route, while a distance is given for the trip. The 19 km refers to this named trip, not to the directions for the cycle route.

Cycling races are also part of local sport: SK Kolšov organizes races as part of the “Šumperský pohár horských kol” series. The “Běh Markovicou” race is part of the “Chlapácký běh” cross-country running series. These event connections add further sporting themes to the village’s routes.

Architectural History and Festival Traditions

Two dated examples offer a glimpse into the area’s architectural history. The protected “Usedlost č. p. 2” estate dates from 1845 and is considered an example of vernacular Empire architecture from the first half of the 19th century. The Chapel of St. Martin was built in 1820. There is a 25-year gap between the chapel’s construction and the date of the estate.

The Martinské hody festival is still celebrated in Kolšov. One dated example of an event at the chapel is an open day held on November 11, 2022. It featured information about the chapel’s history, recorded church music, light refreshments and fresh St. Martin’s wine. The date describes an event held on that day; it does not indicate an annual event date.
