In Dřevohostice, significant buildings stand alongside archaeological traces and routes with different focuses. The Renaissance water castle and the Brethren Bell Tower tell the story of the town; the Záhorská Cycling Route also passes through it. As you plan your trip, you can consider culture, archaeology and outdoor activities as different highlights.

Renaissance Building and Outer Bailey

Dřevohostice Castle is a four-winged Renaissance water castle. It was built on the site of a water fortress that was already there before 1368, and is one of the most significant monuments of the Moravian Renaissance. The castle thus brings two distinct periods into focus: the older water fortress and the Renaissance building later constructed on its site.

In the outer bailey, on either side of the upper gate, two valuable Baroque statues stand on high plinths: Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander. The fire brigade museum is also located in the outer bailey; access to it is seasonal. The information centre at the castle offers visits to the castle and the fire brigade museum. It also provides tourist maps and brochures. Before your visit, check current visiting arrangements and seasonal access to the museum.

Bell Tower and Local History

The Renaissance Brethren Bell Tower has five storeys and is 25 metres high; its present form dates from 1581. Its belfry houses the bell “Maria”: it dates from 1721 and weighs 685 kilograms. The two dates therefore refer to different things—the tower’s present form and the bell. Together, they offer a glimpse into Dřevohostice’s architectural and bell history.

Another public artwork stands in Novosady in front of house No. 359: the statue of Saint Roch. It is a folk Baroque sculpture from the second half of the 18th century. Those interested in archaeology will find two other notable names: the Dřevohostice burial ground and the Dřevohostice-type jug are well known in archaeology. The burial ground is also featured on the local educational trail.

Educational Trail and Cycling Route

A description of the Dřevohostickým lesem educational trail, published in 2021, introduces natural and historical features of the forest north of Dřevohostice. As this description dates from 2021, check the trail’s condition before your visit. The Záhorská Cycling Route passes through Dřevohostice. Its description, updated in August 2026, gives a total length of approximately 39 kilometres. The route follows paved surfaces, has some climbs and is better suited to trekking bikes.

The routes have different focuses: the educational trail highlights the nature and history of the forest north of the town, while the cycling route specifies its length, surfaces and climbs. This can help you decide which theme better suits your stay, without presenting the two options as part of one shared route.
