Explore Krnov from several cultural and historical perspectives: on Vorderer Cvilín Hill, a Baroque pilgrimage church, a Way of the Cross and an observation tower stand together; in Krnov, the synagogue, the Church of St Benedict in Kostelec and Flemmich Villa each add their own distinctive character. You can focus your stay on sacred architecture, Jewish architectural history or early 20th-century architecture.

Cvilín: Pilgrimage Church and Views

The Baroque, twin-towered pilgrimage church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows stands on Vorderer Cvilín Hill above Krnov, at an elevation of 437 m. Its red-and-white design is one of its defining architectural features, along with its two towers. The church is a national cultural monument; a Way of the Cross is also located on the hill. Every year, the pilgrimage church welcomes numerous visitors for regular religious pilgrimages. If you would like to take part in a pilgrimage, check the dates before your trip.

The Lichtenštejnská rozhledna observation tower also stands on Vorderer Cvilín Hill, offering sweeping views of the surrounding area. Its opening hours may vary by season; check the current times before your visit. Two distinct attractions are therefore close together on Cvilín: religious tradition and architecture on the one hand, and views of the surrounding area on the other.

Synagogue: Architectural History and Present-Day Use

The Krnovská synagoga was built in 1871–1872 in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its Moorish interior is inspired by Sephardic Jewish architecture. These two influences give the building a multifaceted architectural character: the style and the interior’s inspiration tell different parts of its design history. For visitors interested in architecture, this contrast offers a distinctive way to appreciate the synagogue.

Today, the synagogue serves as a museum, exhibition venue, and cultural and religious space. The site thus brings historic architecture together with several present-day uses. Check opening details before your visit. Unlike the religious pilgrimages on Cvilín, the synagogue also draws attention to its current role as a museum and exhibition venue.

Church and Villa: Two More Architectural Histories

The Church of St Benedict in Krnov-Kostelec was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Its original presbytery survives as the sacristy. This makes the building’s history tangible in a specific architectural feature: the early date is notable, as is the original section’s continued function.

Flemmich Villa represents a much later period of construction. It was built between 1914 and 1917 as the family residence of textile manufacturer Theodor Flemmich and designed by Viennese architect Otto Prutscher. Its exhibition rooms are open to visitors daily except Mondays; guided tours are available on request. As operating arrangements may change for organizational reasons, check the visiting information in advance. Visiting the villa therefore requires some planning in addition to appreciating its architecture: guided tours must be requested, and the exhibition rooms are closed on Mondays.

Two Observation Towers, Different Locations

The Vyhlídka observation tower is located on Ježník. The locations clearly distinguish the two towers: Lichtenštejnská rozhledna stands on Vorderer Cvilín Hill, while Vyhlídka is on Ježník. The sweeping views of the surrounding area are also a described feature of the Cvilín tower. When choosing a viewpoint, you can therefore start by distinguishing the towers by their specific locations rather than grouping them together solely because they serve a similar purpose.
