The ruins of Rotštejn Castle, the sandstone formations of Klokočské skály and opportunities for swimming or skiing offer different options for a stay in Mirova Pod Kozakovem. You can tailor your visit to your own interests, with a choice of cultural history, geological formations and seasonal activities.

Rotštejn: Castle complex and access

The Rotštejn castle complex is partly built of masonry and partly carved into a block of four sandstone rocks. It began opening to the public in stages in 1998; the first full tourist season began in 2004. Check the current access conditions before visiting.

Parking is available in Loktuše, within the municipality. From there, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads about 1.5 kilometres to the castle ruins. The route offers a clear point of reference for planning a walk; check trail conditions before setting out.

Sandstone landscape and caves

The Klokočské skály Nature Reserve is characterised by a rock wall of Palaeozoic sandstone up to 60 metres thick, with numerous cave niches. The sandstone rock area near Mirova Pod Kozakovem lies within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area.

Weathering of less resistant sections of rock, along with other geomorphological processes, has created caves, rock arches, tunnels, mushroom-shaped rocks and rock towers in Klokočské skály. Postojna–Amerika Cave is the only accessible cave in Klokočské skály. It is closed in winter during the bat breeding season; check access conditions before travelling.

Klokočské průchody combine a rocky landscape with a history of travel: the 70-metre-long rock steps have been part of a trade route since the Middle Ages. Klokočí is an access point to the Klokočské skály area.

Viewpoints with different perspectives

Zdenčina skála is a ten-metre-high viewpoint at the edge of the rocky area. Steps carved into the rock lead to the top, where the view extends across the Jizera Valley. By contrast, the covered viewing platform at Dubecko Lookout Tower is 33 metres high and offers expansive views across the Český ráj landscape.

Dubecko Lookout Tower is open year-round in favourable weather. You can borrow the entrance key for a deposit from Mr Lejsek at house No. 6 in Dubecko; the house is about 150 metres from the tower. Check the weather and key arrangements before travelling.

Consider seasonal options

There is a small ski slope in the municipality. There are also water basins suitable for swimming; check locally whether conditions are suitable for bathing. This gives you a choice of different types of activity: the cave is closed in winter, while bathing conditions should be checked locally. It is also advisable to check current conditions at the ski slope before visiting.

For planning purposes, consider the conditions for each attraction separately: Rotštejn and the rock formations offer castle and landscape experiences, while the viewpoints provide different perspectives. The cave, tower, ski slope and bathing basins each have their own guidance on access, weather or suitability. Choose according to which of these aspects matters most for your trip.
