Lomnické suchary have been made in Lomnice nad Popelkou since the 19th century; their double-baking method defines this local specialty. The town also offers insights into its industrial history, traditional wooden buildings and a protected peat bog lake to the south. Each place has a distinct focus: the museum centres on the history of the town and region, Karlov on folk architecture, and Jezírko pod Táborem on nature.

Museum and Castle: History and Culture

The Městské muzeum a galerie Lomnice nad Popelkou has a permanent exhibition on Lomnické suchary and the town’s industrial heritage. As exhibitions may be reorganised over time, the specific displays may also change. The museum also explores the history and ethnography of the Lomnicko region, the mineralogy and zoology of Český ráj and Podkrkonoší, and works by regional artists. Its themes therefore range from local production and town history to natural history and art.

Visitor offerings include night tours of the museum and expert-guided tours of the historic town centre. Private tours can be arranged, although advance arrangements may be necessary. These formats offer a different focus from exploring the exhibition independently: the night tour takes visitors through the museum, while the guided tour focuses on the historic town centre.

Lomnice nad Popelkou Castle also reflects a distinct period in history: the Valdštejn family had it built in the 16th century, and Václav Morzin remodelled it in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The castle regularly hosts the Léto na zámku cultural series. Events, exhibitions, lectures and concerts occasionally round out the programme. If you have a particular date in mind, check the current events programme.

Folk Architecture in Karlov

Karlov in Lomnice nad Popelkou is a village conservation area featuring folk architecture. Its large rectangular square is lined with single-storey wooden houses with carved gables and arcades. Here, the architectural style differs from that of the Baroque-remodelled castle: rather than a single castle building, the square and wooden houses together define the area’s architectural character. Anyone interested in architectural history will find two clearly distinct themes here: the castle’s historical development and Karlov’s protected folk architecture.

Peat Bog Lake, Views and Winter Cross-Country Skiing

Jezírko pod Táborem, a peat bog lake protected as a natural monument since 1996, lies south of Lomnice nad Popelkou. The area preserves a habitat for round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) as well as a peat-bog plant community. Here, the focus is not on architectural history but on a distinctive peatland and plant life.

The Skokanský můstek K-70 observation tower was created by converting a ski jump. Its cup-shaped viewing gallery gives it an unusual form, and the tower is 28 metres high. From there, visitors can enjoy unobstructed panoramic views of the Jizera Mountains, Ještědsko-kozákovský hřbet, Český ráj, Bezděz, the Krkonoše Mountains and Lomnice nad Popelkou. The tower is accessible year-round; a box at its foot is provided for voluntary admission contributions. Check the current conditions before your visit.

For cross-country skiing, the Lomnická běžecká magistrála is a weather-dependent option: when winter weather conditions are favourable, up to 30 kilometres of trails are groomed. The possible distance therefore depends on winter conditions and should not be understood as a fixed trail length for every season. This seasonal activity differs from the observation tower, which is accessible year-round.

Local Products

Alongside Lomnické suchary, Lomnické pivo is also a regional product. The history of the brewery in Lomnice nad Popelkou dates back to the 16th century. Together with the double-baking method used for the suchary, which have been made since the 19th century, these product stories give the town a tangible culinary connection. They complement the museum and architecture themes without blurring the distinct character of each attraction.
