A red-marked hiking trail leads from Klokočí through the Klokočské průchody to a trail junction. The 70-metre-long rock steps provide access from the village to the Klokočské skály area. These are two different measures for orientation: the length of the rock steps describes the passage itself, while the red marking traces the route to the trail junction. If the rock landscape is the main focus of your trip, you can take both details into account when planning.

Rock landscape and trails

The Klokočské skály are among the fourteen unique sandstone areas in the Český ráj Geopark, also known as rock towns because of their appearance. The nature reserve is an exceptionally large, continuous rock complex of Cretaceous origin and includes the remains of a relict pine forest. The geological context and forest remains make the area about more than just a few striking rocks.

Weathering of less resistant parts of the rock and other geomorphological processes created caves, rock gates, tunnels, rock mushrooms and rock towers. The range therefore extends from hollow and passage forms to striking rock formations. Those interested in the landscape can view these different formations as part of one continuous sandstone area.

Rotštejn and the history of the village

The romantic ruins of Rotštejn Castle lie at the outer edge of the nature reserve. The castle was founded around 1250. From Klokočí, the ruins are an access point to the Klokočské skály. The castle’s history and access to the rock area are thus linked to a specific place.

The Klokočské průchody also have a historical dimension: a trade route passed through them as early as the Middle Ages. Today, the red-marked hiking trail also passes through the passages, but continues as far as a trail junction. The passage can therefore be understood both in terms of its role in navigating the hiking trail and its medieval trade history.

The surviving Boží muka is an example of a rural foundation. The farmer Václav Vlček of Klokočí is named as its patron in 1847. Together with the castle ruins, it offers a different perspective on the village than the sandstone landscape: here, the focus is on local cultural history and the people associated with it.

Cave and seasonal planning

The Postojna–Amerika Cave is in Zelený důl and is the only accessible cave in the Klokočské skály. It is closed in winter because bats breed there. If you are planning a visit, check the current conditions in advance; the time of year is a specific factor to consider here.

Choose your stay based on your interests

When looking for a hotel in Klokočí near Turnov, you can first decide whether nature or cultural history is the main consideration. The Klokočské skály, with their marked trails and rock formations, offer a connection to nature; Rotštejn and the Boží muka add historical themes to your stay.
