Neukirchen (Nový Kostel) lies within the Přírodní park Leopoldovy Hamry; the local churches tell the story of building phases spanning several centuries. There are also two cycling routes of different approximate lengths, a railway stop in Spálená and riding lessons. This offers several different ways to plan a short discovery trip: historic buildings, countryside, cycling or an activity on horseback.

Countryside and nature

The Přírodní park Leopoldovy Hamry was established in 1986 to preserve the landscape and natural environment of a sparsely populated area of the Krušné hory. Neukirchen lies within the nature park. Landscape conservation is therefore a consideration in its own right when choosing a place to stay, alongside the historic churches and buildings.

There is a mineral spring beside the road from Nový Kostel towards Mlýnek. If you plan to visit the spring, check local access conditions in advance.

Churches and historic buildings

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Nový Kostel was originally built in 1613 and expanded to its present form in 1776. Its building history thus combines an original structure with a clearly dated construction period and a later expansion.

The Church of St George stands in Kopanina, an incorporated part of Nový Kostel. The Rococo church dates from 1770 and stands on the site of an older Gothic church, built as early as the first half of the 13th century. The church features ceiling paintings by J. G. Fracka and furnishings that are predominantly Rococo. The medieval predecessor and the later Rococo church therefore stand close together as distinct building phases at this site.

Spálená also has a historic building complex: the Nový Dvůr farm complex includes a Rococo chateau built around 1792.

Cycling routes and activities

The Cestou smírčích křížů cycling route is approximately 50 kilometres long and runs along the boundary of the Přírodní park Leopoldovy Hamry. It leads to Kopanina, where the Church of St George stands. Cycling route 2132, about 25 kilometres long, runs from the Wernitzgrün-Luby border crossing via Luby, Nový Kostel and Milhostov to Nebanice.

Based on the approximate distances, Cestou smírčích křížů is about twice as long as route 2132. The routes also differ: one follows the boundary of the nature park and leads to Kopanina, while the other connects several named places. Route conditions and signage may change, so check the route locally before setting out.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Nový Kostel railway stop in Spálená is on regional railway line 146 between Tršnice and Luby u Chebu. It is part of the integrated transport system; tickets for passenger services are sold on the train. Check current services and ticketing arrangements before travelling, as train connections and station arrangements may change.
