Poutnov offers a cultural and historical perspective stretching from the Middle Ages to the modern era, as well as Baroque architecture and works of art, and memorial sites. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping historical periods and access conditions in mind separately: access to the memorial to the victims of the First World War is partially restricted in summer; for the Jewish cemetery, check the historical access description on site. There is also specific information about arriving by cycle route and by train.

From the archaeological area to the Baroque period

In Poutnov’s historic centre, the archaeological area covers the period from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Poutnov Baroque Castle was built after 1627 on the edge of the former manor farm. The archaeological area spans the Middle Ages to the modern era, while the castle’s construction after 1627 provides a more specific chronological reference.

The artworks include the late Baroque stone statue of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child. Created in 1764, it depicts the saint with Mary and Jesus as children. The statue has been protected as a monument since 1958 and was most recently restored in 2017. Another example of High Baroque sculpture in the rural Czech context is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The religious art thus ranges from a precisely described figurative subject to an art-historical classification within rural Czechia.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity also forms part of the town’s religious history: Masses were regularly celebrated in the chapel, which has since been demolished, on Whit Monday. The building was demolished in 1959, so the services should be understood as a historical practice.

Memorial sites and visiting conditions

The memorial to the victims of the First World War was erected in 1925 and takes the form of a symbolic forest cemetery. It commemorates 23 citizens of Poutnov who fell, died or went missing as a result of the war. The path leading to the memorial was restored. Nevertheless, the site is now neglected, increasingly overgrown and partially inaccessible in summer. A restored path does not mean that the site is accessible at all times. Check the situation on site before planning your visit.

A historical description of access to the Jewish cemetery gives it as a direct turn-off from a public road through a damaged opening in a wall without a gate. As this access description is based on a historical survey, check on site whether the path is usable. This lets you take the actual access conditions into account instead of treating the older information as a guarantee of present-day conditions.

Landscape, cycle route and travel

Poutnov lies in the southeastern part of the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area and in the Tepelská vrchovina uplands.

Cycle route 2284 leads to Poutnov railway station, providing a specific reference point for planning your ride. As for rail services, České dráhy currently offer no services at Poutnov railway station, and trains operated by this company do not stop there. As services may change, check the information for your specific connection again before travelling.
