Mühlbach (Pomezí nad Ohří) lies on the right bank of the Skalka Reservoir, formed by the Ohře River. The surrounding area is shaped by nature. Its waterside landscape, protected habitats, cycling routes, and traces of history each offer something different. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus mainly on cycling, nature, or architectural and local history.
Reservoir and Wetlands
The Skalka Reservoir and the Ohře River shape the landscape around the town. The Pomezní rybník protected area offers a distinct natural feature: it preserves nearby wetlands and bodies of water that are home to rare and endangered plant and animal species. The water arum (Calla palustris) is particularly noteworthy. If you are interested in habitats and the species they support, this area offers another nature-focused destination alongside the reservoir, drawing attention to wetlands and bodies of water.
Romanesque and Medieval Traces
The Church of St. James the Greater is one of the oldest churches in the Cheb region. It has Romanesque foundations and is documented as early as the 10th century. Fragments of its original Romanesque structure survive, as do parts from later Gothic building phases. Its architectural history therefore spans several periods: Romanesque elements stand alongside additions from later times. For a cultural history focus, the church offers not only an early date but also a variety of building phases.
Another historical feature is the Liebeneck castle site in the cadastral area of Tůně, part of Pomezí nad Ohří. It is distinguished by a striking triangular earthwork with a ditch and rampart. The castle was probably founded as early as the 14th century and had been abandoned or fallen into ruin by the 15th century at the latest. The church and castle site thus tell different parts of the town’s history: the church retains architectural elements from various periods, while the castle site is characterized by its distinctive earthworks.
