In Klein-Werscheditz, cultural history spans from a Renaissance fortress dating to the mid-16th century, through a late Baroque chapel, to a war memorial erected in 1920. This gives you a clear focus when choosing a place to stay: architectural history and remembrance culture can be combined as themes for your trip without letting any one period dominate. The dates help put things in context: the castle and Renaissance granary date to the mid-16th century, the chapel was built in 1740, and the memorial was added in 1920. This makes for a historical arc from the Renaissance through the Baroque period to more recent history.

Renaissance and Architectural History

Klein-Werscheditz Castle originated as a Renaissance fortress commissioned by Volf ze Štampachu in the mid-16th century. The Renaissance granary was also built by Volf ze Štampachu in the mid-16th century. The buildings thus share a period and a builder, but represent different architectural forms. For culture enthusiasts, this shared connection offers a concrete point of comparison: the castle originated as a fortress, while the granary was built as a separate structure.

The Renaissance granary was completely reconstructed between 2016 and 2020. The two time periods mark distinct phases: the mid-16th century refers to its construction, while 2016 to 2020 marks the completed reconstruction. Visitors interested in historic buildings can thus distinguish between the date of construction and later building work, rather than combining the histories of both structures into a single period.

The Chapel and Remembrance Culture

The late Baroque Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built in 1740 and solemnly consecrated on October 19 of that same year. The exact consecration date adds a specific calendar day to the year of construction. The chapel stands on a low, unobtrusive hill to the southeast of Klein-Werscheditz. Its location provides a geographical reference for its architectural history; its style, year of construction and consecration date are the historical points of reference.

As part of a comprehensive reconstruction from 2015 to 2022, the chapel was converted into an exhibition and concert hall. If you would like to plan your visit around an exhibition or concert, check the current program and visitor information in advance. This keeps the completed reconstruction separate from the question of which events are currently taking place.

The war memorial in Klein-Werscheditz was erected in 1920 in memory of the victims of the First World War. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was restored and supplemented with an inscribed plaque commemorating the victims of the Second World War. The memorial’s history thus brings together two distinct periods: the original commemoration of the victims of the First World War and the later addition honoring the victims of the Second World War. The memorial was designed by master stonemason V. Hacker from Doupov, who probably also executed the work.

Cycling Route and Surface

Cycling Route 2249 runs through the northern part of the municipality of Klein-Werscheditz. It is mostly paved; the section between Lučiny and Čínov is gravel. This change in surface is a practical detail to bear in mind when planning to include the route in a bike ride. As surfaces can change, it is worth checking the current conditions before setting out. This way, you can factor the cycling route into your trip planning as a separate activity alongside the area’s cultural and historical attractions.
