A nature trail just under three kilometres long leads through the immediate surroundings of Velký Vřešťov. There are also notable reminders of the village’s history and a protected natural area along the Trotina. This gives you a choice of different ways to spend your stay—from walking the trail to exploring historical details and the landscape by the pond.
Nature Trail and Cycle Route
The Po stopách vřešťovské krásy nature trail follows easy paths and tracks. It is suitable for small children and pushchairs. Its length and terrain give you practical information for planning a walk, without having to set aside time for a longer hiking route.
Velký Vřešťov is also a named point on a route for cyclists: cycle route 4271 runs from Doubravice via Lanžov, Velký Vřešťov and Jeřičky to Lužany. The waypoints help you identify the route, while the nature trail offers a separate way to explore the immediate surroundings on paths and tracks.
Church, Pulpit and Castle Ruins
The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of All Saints (Všech svatých) was rebuilt in 1723 after an earlier church burned down. It contains a Renaissance pulpit donated by Jan Duchek Borovnický in 1615. There is also a tombstone for Věnek Kordule ze Sloupna and his wife Johanka. The two dates mark different periods: the pulpit was donated more than a century before the church was rebuilt.
A historic pillory stands in front of the church; it was once used as a place of punishment. The remains of the former castle are another reminder of the village’s history. Its inner area is surrounded by a slightly lower outer bailey, known as the Parkán. A rampart-like fortification remnant survives at the eastern edge. Together, the church, pillory and castle ruins illustrate different aspects of Velký Vřešťov’s history, without needing to be treated as a single attraction.
Nature Reserve and Pond
Vřešťovská bažantnice is a protected nature reserve around the Trotina. The area includes an old floodplain oak forest and rich herbaceous vegetation; old oaks, hornbeams and alders also grow there. Springs and wetlands shape the natural environment. Below, the Trotina flows alongside a historic channel.
Please observe the fencing around Vřešťovská bažantnice. View the protected area from its edges rather than entering the forest or going to the springs and pools. This is important if you are including the protected landscape in your plans: visitors are expected to enjoy the view from outside.
The main beach at Velkovřešťovský rybník is grassy, and the bottom at the water’s edge is gravelly. Swimming is at your own risk. Fishing is permitted in the pond, except at the designated beach. If you plan to fish, check the local conditions and any required permits beforehand. The beach surface, swimming notice and fishing restriction relate to different aspects of a visit to the pond.
Different ways to spend your stay
The local options appeal to different interests: the nature trail offers a short route on easy paths and tracks, cycle route 4271 passes through the village, and the church and castle ruins offer insights into its history. Visitors are subject to separate conditions at the pond and in the nature reserve. When planning your trip, consider which of these topics matter most to you; this will help you tailor your stay in Velký Vřešťov to your interests without conflating the individual places and activities.
