When choosing Sněžné for a trip, you can explore the village’s timber-building history, marked cycling routes, and nature destinations in the surrounding area. The village lies in a gentle valley in the Náchodská vrchovina, in the northeastern part of the Eagle Mountains. Its elevation ranges from 540 to 738 metres above sea level. For planning purposes, it is worth considering the village’s history separately from routes in the surrounding area: the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows connects several of the topics described, while nature destinations can also be found nearby.
Cycling Routes Around Sněžné
Two marked cycling routes can be compared by their approximate lengths. Route 4214 runs from Janov and Tis through Sněžné and Polom by the chapel to Olešnice v Orlických horách, and is about seven kilometres long. Route 4325 runs from Sněžné through Janov and Ohnišov to Dobruška; it is about twelve kilometres long. Route 4214 is therefore the shorter of the two, and route 4325 the longer. Exact signage and surface conditions may change; check them before setting off.
Another option is an easy route from Sněžné through the Zlatý potok valley and back. It starts at the Horalka chalet in Sněžné. The route is also suitable for children in a bicycle trailer. The approximate lengths are the main point of comparison for the numbered cycling routes, while this loop stands out for its easy nature and stated suitability for a trailer.
Chapel, Timber Buildings, and History
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was consecrated in 1892 and is a building of architectural and historical significance. From the hill above the chapel, there are views of the surrounding area and the ridge of the Eagle Mountains. A blue-marked hiking trail passes by the chapel; check its markings on site.
Linen production is also part of the village’s history: a linen manufactory was established in Sněžné in the second half of the 18th century, employing up to 500 home weavers. The former manufactory building No. 1 is a protected timber structure. Numerous log houses are among the village’s tourist attractions. Visitors can also see a traditional former school building constructed of timber. Together, these buildings illustrate different aspects of local timber construction and its history.
Another destination is the unfinished Skutina fortification, one of Sněžné’s tourist attractions. It is part of the Czechoslovak border fortification system built along the then Czechoslovak border from 1935 to 1938. In bunker N-S 48 U Stodol, part of the Skutina Fortress Museum, there is a 36-metre-deep shaft with 201 steps; about nine metres of a concrete gallery are also accessible. The site opened to the public in 2001 as the Skutina Fortress Museum. As access conditions to the underground may change, check current access information before your visit.
Nature Trail and Nature in the Surrounding Area
Opened in 2025, the Bílé lišky nature trail is a three-kilometre circular route with 18 stops covering nature and local history. It starts at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows on the edge of the village, passes through the forest and a municipal avenue, and returns to the chapel. The nature trail has information boards with activities and interactive features, including a dendrophone and a fitness wheel. The route and individual installations may change; check the latest information before setting off.
The nearby area has botanically interesting, damp to marshy meadows with globeflowers, orchids, spring snowflakes, and primroses. Also nearby, on the left bank of the Zlatý potok, is the Louka u Čtvrtečkova mlýna natural monument. Spring snowflakes bloom there in abundance.
