A chapel dating from 1826 stands in the built-up part of Bohdašín, at a crossroads opposite house no. 47. Together with the views of the Elbe lowlands and the Giant Mountains, it makes this destination a place of specific local details set within a broad landscape. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you would like to focus on landscapes, religious buildings or historic places in the surrounding area.
Landscape and Local Buildings
Bohdašín lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains and offers views of the Elbe lowlands and the Giant Mountains. In the built-up part of the village, the dated chapel stands at a crossroads opposite house no. 47; its bell tower is prismatic. On the edge of the village, on the road to Slavoňov, there is also a sandstone group depicting Calvary. Check its condition in person. The chapel and the Calvary depiction are two different forms of religious art that stand side by side as specific features of the place.
Rokole: Pilgrimage and Distinctive Architectural Forms
Rokole is a Marian pilgrimage site that arose at the location of an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The church Rokolský kostel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Rokole. It was built in 1930, is Pseudo-Gothic, and was consecrated on 19 August 1945. The wooden Loreta in Rokole is an open-fronted passageway hung with images of the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
Opposite Rokole, a Stations of the Cross was built in the forest in 1874. Cast-iron reliefs are set on stone pillars there. The open Loreta and the Stations of the Cross therefore differ clearly in design: one is a passageway with images, the other a series of reliefs on pillars. The Schoenstatt Chapel in Rokole was consecrated on 19 July 1997 and is considered the first original Schoenstatt shrine in Bohemia.
The Cesta manželů in Rokole runs alongside ponds and has 15 panels with texts and sculptures. This makes it possible to appreciate the path through its specific design features, not just its name. A 2024 hiking description also mentions a marked route from Rokole to Bohdašín, marked green at first and then blue. Check the trail markers again in person.
History in Bohdašín and the Surrounding Area
Bohdašín formerly belonged to the Frymburk estate. Iron ore was mined around Bohdašín and Bydlo around 1446, and ironworks were established. The village’s former estate affiliation and its local mining history are two distinct historical strands that broaden the perspective beyond individual buildings.
Frymburk Castle is also part of the historic surroundings. It was in use from the 14th to the 17th century; its complex includes an 18.5 m-wide donjon on the castle promontory. The castle ruins lie near Nový Hrádek on a high rocky promontory around which the Olešenka flows. The period of use, the donjon and the riverside location offer different points of reference for understanding the castle complex in its historical and geographical context.
