Vlkov combines village architecture and historic memorial sites with nature watching at the V Lužinách pond. Exploring the village brings you into contact with a variety of themes: rural buildings, monuments and scenic views.
Village Architecture and Historic Landmarks
The original, tasteful rural buildings are a defining feature of Vlkov’s appearance. The “Vlkov gates” are a characteristic element of the village square’s architecture. The polygonal barn is the last surviving polygonal barn in the Hradec region. However, it is only occasionally open to visitors; if you would like to see it, ask locally about the possibility of a visit. Polygonal means having many sides and describes the barn’s distinctive shape.
The war memorial in Vlkov dates from 1929 and bears the names of 18 victims of the First World War and two victims of the Second World War. A monolithic sandstone cross in the meadows north of Vlkov is sometimes called a reconciliation cross. After it was discovered in 1993, it was re-erected about 50 metres from its original location. The two memorial sites offer different points of focus: the monument records the names of the victims, while the cross’s history also includes its later re-erection.
A military triangulation pillar stands in a field south of Vlkov, near the road to Hradec Králové. It is part of the Josefov triangulation network, established in 1874, and one of only three surviving points in the network. The dates refer to different events: 1929 marks the war memorial, 1993 the discovery of the cross, after which it was re-erected, and 1874 the triangulation network.
Pond, Views and a Place to Eat
The V Lužinách pond is near the edge of the village and is suitable for walks and nature watching. The views differ by direction: from the eastern side of Vlkov, you can see the Orlické Mountains; to the north, the view is roughly bounded by the well-known panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains. This brings together a specific spot for nature watching and two different landscape perspectives.
Hospůdka Pod Lipami is a visitor-friendly pub in Vlkov. Its offerings include three types of beer, homemade lemonades and coffee, as well as simple dishes such as pizza, pickled Hermelín cheese, pickled sausage, sausage and rollmops. In summer, outdoor seating is available. As the food menu may change, it is a good idea to check the current selection before visiting.
Vlkov offers several specific points of interest to help you decide what to focus on: village square architecture and the barn, various historic landmarks, nature watching at the pond, and views in two directions. You can decide which of these will shape your stay according to your interests.
