Libchyně lies in a valley on the Libchyňský potok, about 4 km upstream and northeast of Nové Město nad Metují. The Geostezka Libchyňské údolí follows the green hiking trail through the valley to Libchyně. For planning your trip, the location by the stream and the trail route provide a shared point of reference.
Valley and Landscape
The valley of the Libchyňský potok offers a walk through almost wild nature. Along its entire course, the stream cuts into the bedrock. This consists of Upper Cretaceous sediments, particularly marlstones, as well as underlying metamorphic phyllites. This connects the village’s location by the water with a geological feature: the stream is part of the valley and is also characterized by its incision into the bedrock. Those interested in the landscape will therefore find not only a walk through the valley, but also a specific reference to the rocks beneath the stream.
Hiking Trails and Orientation
The section of the Geostezka Libchyňské údolí from the “nad koupalištěm” junction to Libchyně is 3.3 km long. The Geostezka’s terrain is not suitable for strollers. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The “Sendraž – rozhledna Na Vartě” hiking trail also leads to Libchyně. It runs through the valley of the Libchyňský potok and crosses five footbridges.
The trails can be distinguished by different features: for the Geostezka, the length of a section to the village is given; for the “Sendraž – rozhledna Na Vartě” hiking trail, the valley route and five footbridges are part of the trail. When planning, you can therefore weigh whether a specific section length or the described trail features provide you with more guidance.
A route through Libchyně also takes you to a stone cross dating from 1872. The cross provides a later historical point of reference than the village’s first mention and its mill history.
History of the Village
The first written mention of Libchyně dates from 1459. In 1503, Jan Černčický of Kácov handed the village over to the newly founded Nové Město Hradiště, under whose feudal rule Libchyně remained until 1848. The dates represent different events: the first written mention, the handover of the village, and the end of its feudal subjection.
A mill adds a chapter on local industry to this political history. Jan Štěpán built it in Libchyně in 1557; Jan Libchyňský bought it in 1636. The construction and purchase fall between the 1503 handover and the end of feudal subjection in 1848. Together with the stone cross of 1872, they form a timeline of different local points of reference, from the first written record through the 19th century.
