Rock faces, scree slopes and an old stone hillside path give Peklo a distinctive character; in Jestřebí, the history of traditional log houses and hand weaving adds another dimension. When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance nature, trails, paddling and architecture. The paddling route offers two sections with different difficulty ratings. At the Bartoňova útulna, devil motifs range from the building’s decorative details to the specialties on offer.

Peklo: Rocky Valley and Forest

The Peklo Nature Reserve protects the unregulated river valleys of the Metuje and Olešenka, as well as a varied landscape of block fields, scree slopes and rock faces. In the deep valley, rocky outcrops display numerous signs of weathering. Part of the valley was designated a nature reserve in 1997, covering just under 320 hectares, primarily to protect numerous animal and insect species. Peklo is also designated a Site of Community Importance in the Natura 2000 network. The forests resemble natural woodlands with little human influence; beech and scree forests are especially characteristic, along with fir, elm, lily and daphne. Block fields are accumulations of large rock blocks, while scree slopes consist of loose rock. These terms help distinguish the different rock formations in the valley.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Water

An old stone-built path runs along the slope at Peklo, offering views of the local forests. Numerous hiking and cycling trails currently pass through Peklo. On the water, planning is divided by section: Bražec–Peklo is rated WW I, while the section from Peklo to Nové Město nad Metují is rated WW II. The second section is suitable for experienced paddlers; the route includes rapids and cascades. The different ratings provide a clear basis for comparing the sections when choosing between them. The land trails and paddling route offer different focuses: hiking and cycling take priority on the trails, while the water route is divided into sections by difficulty rating. Check current water conditions before setting out.

History, Architecture and Local Cuisine

Jestřebí was first mentioned in writing in 1459. Around 1890, some 35 handlooms were in operation in Jestřebí. These dates mark two historical perspectives: the earliest written record and a later chapter in the history of local crafts. Several traditional log houses stand in the village centre. The Bartoňova útulna is a significant architectural landmark, decorated with figures and other devil motifs. The log houses and the landmark add different accents to the village streetscape: traditional building styles on the one hand, and a world of devilish motifs on the other. The Bartoňova útulna also offers devil-inspired specialties; the specific selection may change. Another historical point of interest is the former Pekelec mill, where a restaurant for day-trippers began operating in 1912.
