In Knezeves, plane spotting and a rich local history come together. The village lies on the Pražská plošina above the Únětický potok, about 10 kilometres from Prague and directly on the boundary of the area of the international Praha-Ruzyně Airport. The Únětický potok rises in Knezeves. These geographical landmarks explain the village’s connection to the airport, while Baroque architecture, a chapel with several building phases, archaeological finds, and an annual festival reveal other sides of the village. You can therefore connect your stay either with a specific aviation interest or with local history.
Plane spotting at the spotting platform
The spotting platform near Kněževes is a place for plane spotting. A gravel track leads on foot from the adjacent Na Staré silnici road to the platform. Parking is available about 100 metres from the platform, and Knezeves can be reached by bus. If you are coming to see the planes, you can make the platform the main purpose of your visit. Check the airport’s information and the bus timetable for your trip in advance. This will help you plan your journey to Knezeves and the route to the platform.
Baroque gate, bell tower, and statue
At house No. 36, the Baroque gate Na Slovance forms part of a late Baroque farmstead. Its split triangular pediment bears a half-length figure of Saint John of Nepomuk. Both details are worth noting when looking at the architecture: the divided shape of the pediment and the figure that adorns it. The late Baroque bell tower Na Slovance dates from 1802. Separately, a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is dated approximately to the second half of the 18th century. Thus, the tower’s precise year stands alongside the statue’s approximate date—a useful distinction when placing these historic features in time.
The building history of St Wenceslas Chapel
The Chapel of St Wenceslas was built in 1736 with funds from the St Wenceslas Jesuit Seminary in Prague. It was extended and restored in 1882, when the chapel acquired its present pseudo-Romanesque appearance. During restoration work in 2014, wall paintings from 1904 were discovered and restored. Several building and restoration phases therefore meet here: its construction in the 18th century, its alteration in the 19th century, and work on the paintings in the 21st century. This chronology makes the chapel particularly interesting if you do not want to reduce its history to a single year of construction.
Archaeological traces and local history
The archaeological finds also reach far back in time: they date from the Neolithic period, the ĂšnÄ›tice culture, and the 8th to 9th centuries. A fortress at Kněževes is first mentioned in 1383; by 1575 it no longer existed. The timeline from the early finds to this historic fortress extends far beyond the chapel’s building phases. The annual SvatováclavskĂ© posvĂcenĂ festival is also part of the yearly calendar, complementing Knezeves’s historic monuments.
Choose the right focus for your stay
When looking for a holiday apartment in Knezeves, your reason for travelling can be a useful starting point: the spotting platform is all about plane spotting, while the gate, bell tower, chapel, and archaeological finds offer a cultural and historical focus. If you are choosing between these themes, you can select Knezeves according to what interests you most during your stay.
