The Hostivické rybníky give Hostivice a distinct natural focus: one stop on the educational trail has a birdwatching hut with an information board. The town also has a protected historic centre and buildings with medieval and Baroque roots. This gives you a clear question to consider when choosing where to stay: would you rather spend your time enjoying the landscape and walking trails, or exploring the town’s architecture and pilgrimage history?
Pond Landscape and Birdwatching
The Hostivické rybníky educational trail is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and open year-round. The protected area is an important site for breeding, overwintering and bird migration. These three functions show its role at different stages of the bird year and give the landscape ecological significance in addition to its walking trails.
The third stop on the educational trail is beside Litovický rybník. There you will find a birdwatching hut and an information board about the birds that can be observed there. The combination of a viewing point and an information board links a stop by the pond with specific information about the birds.
Outside the built-up area, the trails are concentrated mainly around the Hostivické rybníky. The ponds are the town’s most popular destination for walks among local residents. If you are interested in landscapes, trails and birdwatching, this is a distinctive focus of a stay in Hostivice.
Pilgrimage Route and Architectural History
Hostivice’s historic centre is designated a conservation area. The historic Hájek–Strahov pilgrimage route also passed through Hostivice: it ran from Strahovská brána in Prague to Hájek Monastery, west of the town. Three roadside niche chapels have been preserved along the route within Hostivice; originally, there were twenty.
The town’s architectural history ranges from medieval origins to 18th-century buildings and alterations. Hostivický zámek château was built at the end of the 17th century on the site of older farmsteads. Anna Maria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany, had it remodelled into its present form between 1732 and 1734. The Church of St James was founded in the 13th century. The Baroque Hostivická fara rectory was built between 1734 and 1737. Litovická tvrz is originally a Gothic building: Bishop Jan IV of Dražice had it built around 1330; it was later converted into a Baroque granary. These dates and different building phases give the cultural heritage several layers of history.
