Travel interests around Hrušov range from archaeology and architectural history to Baroque sculpture and hiking. When planning, first decide whether you want to focus on archaeological finds, the history of the fortress, art in the landscape or the named section of the hiking trail.

Archaeology and fortification remains

The Únětice culture burial ground is listed as an archaeological site in Hrušov. It lies on a river terrace on the right bank of the Jizera and was archaeologically investigated in the 1950s. Nine stone-lined inhumation graves were examined. The cultural attribution, location by the Jizera and specific number of graves give the archaeological topic a concrete framework.

The Nad Čertůvkou fortified site is classified as a significant archaeological locality in category UAN I. Old ramparts and ditches belonging to a small fortress lie on a spur above the Četůvka. This offers different perspectives on archaeology: the burial ground focuses on burials and excavation, while the fortress draws attention to its position on the spur and its old ramparts and ditches.

The fortress: first mention and the history of its tower

Hrušov was first mentioned in writing in 1346. The later fortress near Hrušov’s farmstead was built in the 14th century; in 1501, it received a new tower. The dates refer to different events: 1346 marks the first written mention of the village, the 14th century the construction of the fortress, and 1501 the new tower. It was blown up and completely demolished in 1959. The history of the complex therefore spans its construction and structural changes through to the loss of the tower.

Baroque sculpture in the landscape

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk provides an artistic highlight alongside the archaeological and architectural-history themes. It depicts the kneeling saint among stone clouds before a cross brought to him by a small angel, with a second angel emerging beside him. The soft modelling and tranquil atmosphere are characteristic of late Baroque sculpture. The religious subject and the described style thus offer two ways of engaging with the same figure.

The statue stands in the fields about two kilometres from Hrušov, on the route linking Hrušov and Horky nad Jizerou. It is below a ridge with views of the Kokořínsko region and Vrátenská hora. The approximate distance and named viewpoints add a specific landscape connection to the artistic description.

Hiking trail and travel planning

For hiking enthusiasts, a 2024 tourism publication lists the red-marked “Svatojakubská cesta” hiking trail on the Krnsko–Písková Lhota–Hrušov section. Check the current trail markings on site before planning your hike around it. Alongside the historical topics, this provides a clearly identified trail section that can be considered as a separate focus when planning. When looking for a holiday apartment in Hrušov, you can put this distinction to practical use: decide whether cultural history or hiking will shape your stay.
