Veltruby brings together three distinct themes for a stay: protected floodplain landscapes, cycling along EuroVelo 4 and cultural history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to consider whether you would like to focus on nature, physical activity or architectural history. Bus and rail connections are also part of planning your journey to the area.

Floodplain landscapes and nature conservation

Veltrubský luh protects old branches of the Elbe with varying water depths, as well as well-preserved floodplain forests. Protected species there include the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina). If you are more guided by landscapes and nature conservation than by sacred architecture when choosing your destination, Veltrubský luh offers a specific focus on nature. The combination of old waters, floodplain forest and a named protected species gives this theme a clear point of reference.

The chapel on the village green

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the village green in Veltruby, opposite House No. 5. Its sandstone portal bears the year 1841; inside is a polychrome statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The portal and statue offer different points of interest: the portal combines sandstone with a specific year, while the statue is distinguished by its multicoloured design. Thus, one building brings together an architectural feature on the exterior and distinctive interior furnishings.

Cultural history and buildings

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary received its present dedication on 14 December 1980. On 30 October 1986, it was entered, together with the statue of Saint Wenceslas, in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. The two dates refer to different events: 1980 marks the dedication, while 1986 marks the registration. This distinction helps place the dates associated with the church more precisely.

At the early medieval Svatovík hillfort, the remains of the former perimeter fortifications are now visible only as a subtle rise in the terrain. Compared with the chapel, with its portal and statue, this is a more understated way to encounter history in the landscape. Another Late Classicist church between Veltruby and Jezeřany was completed in 1846. The year 1841 on the chapel portal is a date marked on a building element; 1846, by contrast, is the completion year of this church. The two dates illustrate different ways of placing building history in time.

Plan your cycling and journey

A developed section of EuroVelo 4 between Velký Osek and Kolín passes through Veltruby. A route notice for the period 2023–2029 recommends using it in wet weather. For your cycling plans, both the route through Veltruby and the stated weather condition are relevant. Veltruby also has bus and rail connections. Check the timetables for your travel dates if you would like to use one of these connections.

A dated event reference

In 2025, the Veltrubská desítka race started and finished at the SK Čechie Veltruby sports ground. The 2025 programme also included a children’s race around Brůdek in Veltruby. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your travel year.
