Masojedy combines a long history with tangible reminders of the past: the chapel stands on the site of a former bell tower, and the ruins of Šember Castle are nearby. Cycle route 0089 also runs nearby. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether local history or a bike ride will shape your stay.

The History of Masojedy

The earliest written mention of Masojedy dates to January 25, 1342. The village was founded in the early 14th century amid the Černokostelecké Forests. Its founding and its written mention are different points of reference: one marks the beginning of the village, while the other is its earliest written record.

Throughout the second half of the 14th century, Masojedy belonged to the Skalický Monastery. Three milestones can therefore be distinguished: the village’s founding at the beginning of the century, its mention in 1342, and its later affiliation with the monastery. Those interested in the development of small medieval settlements can read these details as a sequence.

Chapel and Memorial

The chapel in Masojedy dates from the late 19th century or around the turn of the 20th century. It stands on the site of a former bell tower in the form of a broad-crowned lime tree with a bell; cadastral maps from 1841 document this predecessor. The site thus brings together two distinct periods: the former bell tower and the considerably newer chapel.

The chapel’s history also includes decorative painting and repairs carried out for the celebration of the community’s 666th anniversary. The work was overseen by Josef Vitovský from Hradešín. These anniversary works add a later phase to the chapel’s approximate construction period.

A granite memorial to the citizens of Masojedy who fell in the First World War stands not far from the chapel. The citizens paid for its construction; it was built in 1919. The lower inscription reads “1914–1919.” Its dedication, material and inscription distinguish the memorial from the chapel: here, the focus is on remembering the community’s fallen.

Nearby Castle Ruins and Cycle Route

The ruins of Šember Castle lie near Masojedy. They are considered an important archaeological site and point to earlier settlement. The surviving remains include sections of masonry built into the eastern side, depressions that suggest cellars, remnants of medieval building walls, the area of a half-timbered palace and ramparts.

These traces encompass different parts of the site: masonry, possible cellar areas, a palace area and fortifications. This makes Šember, an archaeological site, distinct from the chapel and memorial in Masojedy, which reveal other aspects of the village’s history. For history enthusiasts, the focus here is on several types of structural remains.

Cycle route 0089 runs near Masojedy. Check the current signs before setting out. This lets you consider the cycle route as a separate planning point alongside the village’s historical attractions.
