Asgata lies at an elevation of 190 metres in the middle of a valley, surrounded by mountains. The named peaks range from 339 to 458 metres. The area also includes farmland, wildflowers, traces of mining history and trails through the landscape. You can therefore tailor your stay to a range of interests, with scenery and outdoor activities taking their place alongside local history and mining.

Valley, Mountains and Cultural Landscape

To the north of Asgata, Kokkines and Vouppa each stand at 370 metres. To the south is Monodentri at 340 metres, to the southwest Teratsotos at 458 metres, to the west Troulloi at 339 metres and to the east Gerakarkos at 361 metres. Together, these mountains surround the lower-lying village in the valley.

Much of the area around Asgata consists of umbra and limestone soil and is used mainly to grow a variety of vegetables, legumes, potatoes, olives, carob, almonds and pomegranates. A wide variety of wildflowers also grow in the area. The area designations also vary: one area southwest of Asgata is part of the Natura 2000 network; another is designated as a “Z” zone, or environmental protection zone.

Mills, Museum and Mining History

In the 1920s, Spyros Louka built one of the first motorised mills in Cyprus. The premises in Asgata included an olive press, a grain mill, a wood splitter and a cotton-cleaning motor. The Mining and Mining Heritage Museum in Asgata opened in May 2024. Its exhibition includes geological instruments, ancient artefacts, photographs of miners from Asgata and their original mining equipment.

The Church of the Twelve Apostles is considered the oldest surviving church in Asgata. It stands east of the village on a steep slope by the Asgata River. Nearby, visitors can see mine sites and galleries at Platies, Mavridia, Lantarka, Mavri Sykia and Petra. If you plan to visit any of these places, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Nature Trails and Routes in the Area

There are nature trails and dirt roads in the Asgata area where you can walk and cycle. One hiking trail runs from Potamia to Hartzi, passing Kourvellorotsos, the waterfall on Mersineri Stream, Kokkinorotsos and the old bridge. This route can therefore be followed using several named waypoints.

Another route starts at the Stavri site, shortly before the turn-off to Asgata, and heads towards Teratsotos. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or by car; from there, the road descends to the village towards Kalavasos. South of Asgata, a hiking trail also leads to a site where Lefkara milkvetch is studied.

The options described differ in specific ways: the route from Potamia to Hartzi has named waypoints along the way, while the route from Stavri offers several ways to travel. The southern hiking trail leads to a site associated with Lefkara milkvetch. You can choose between them according to whether you are more interested in waypoints, your choice of transport or this botanical connection.
