Monagri brings together Commandaria wine growing, traditional village architecture, frescoes and cycling routes. When planning a trip, you can choose between attractions in the village and monasteries in the surrounding area. The two cycling options also differ considerably: one route includes easy to moderate sections, while the other is family-friendly and aimed at beginners.

Commandaria and village character

Monagri is one of the Commandaria villages: non-irrigated vineyards yield Xynisteri and local Mavro grapes for Commandaria. Commandaria has been produced in Cyprus for centuries, reflecting the island's characteristics and the aromas of native grape varieties. This makes it possible to distinguish Monagri's specific connection—its vineyards and grape varieties—from the broader Cypriot tradition. The village is also home to local wineries and a small traditional pastry workshop. Wine growing and confectionery add two culinary points of interest to the village's character.

Churches and monasteries

Paved streets and traditional architecture define Monagri. At its centre stands the Church of St George, the village church and one of the area's most important historical monuments. Its frescoes date from the 15th century. The church therefore combines a central place in village life with a clearly datable art-historical feature.

Nearby, the Monastery of Archangel Michael was destroyed in 1735 and rebuilt in the mid-18th century; further additions were made later. A portrait of Bishop Makarios of Kition (1737–1776) is located above a fresco of Archangel Michael. According to the inscription, both frescoes were painted by Philaretos.

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Amasgou lies outside Monagri, on a low hill on the eastern bank of the Kouris, about 1.5 kilometres southwest of the village. The Byzantine monastic complex has a history spanning more than nine centuries. The exact date of its foundation and the identity of its founder are unknown. The two monasteries offer different historical points of reference: the destruction and rebuilding of the Monastery of Archangel Michael are dated, while the foundation date and founder of Panagia Amasgou remain unknown.

Cycling around Monagri

Route No. 01 of the Commandaria Tour is a cycling route for mountain bikes or off-road touring bikes. It includes easy to moderate sections on unpaved and paved roads. The stated circular route passes through Sylikou, Lania, Monagri and Agios Georgios before returning to Sylikou.

A family-friendly beginner cycling route also explores Monagri and Doros on unpaved and paved roads. When comparing the routes, the route profile and the sequence of places are especially useful: Route No. 01 passes through four named places and includes easy to moderate sections; the second route is specifically intended for families and beginners and names Monagri and Doros. This allows you to choose a cycling option based on its stated focus. Check local conditions before riding.
